Joe Ryan- P- MIN- Hot- As with his previous start, Ryan was one out away from a quality start. On June 30 he allowed 1 ER in 5.2 IP. Yesterday Ryan gave up 3 runs in 5.2 IP on 5 hits and a walk while striking out 8. He has been cranking up the strikeouts recently, with 10 Ks in that June 30 game. Ryan has had excellent control this season, with a 9.71 K/9 and 1.32 BB/9. He has a 3.29 ERA, with his FIP of 3.45 and xFIP of 3.32 very close. Ryan has thrown at least 6 IP in 12 of his 18 starts in 2024. He has shown some decline in the second half in each of the past two seasons. However, Ryan had injury issues in 2023 and his 2022 numbers are skewed by one outing in which he coughed up 10 runs in 4.2 IP. Very few pitchers are universally consistent. Ryan seems to have his clinkers few and far between.
Brent Rooker- OF- OAK- Hot- Rooker was a big part of the beatdown the A's gave the Orioles yesterday. He went 3-for-4 with a homer and sac fly, knocking in 4 runs and scoring 3 times. It was the third time in 4 games Rooker has collected multiple hits and he has 3 homers in his last 5 games. His EV of 92.0 and HardHit% of 50.9% are good indicators for continued power. Currently Rooker has 18 homers in 313 PAs. His .371 BABIP and .256 xBA could foretell a drop in his .277 average.
Alex Vesia- RP- LAD- Hot- Vesia picked up his 5th save of the season yesterday, retiring all 3 batters he faced in the 9th inning. Since June 14, Vesia has 3 saves while Evan Phillips has 5. So while Vesia may not be the chairman of the Dodgers bullpen committee, he is an integral part. With a 1.36 ERA and 11.34 K/9 Vesia can provide fantasy value. The Dodgers will have enough saves to spread around.
Tyler Anderson- P- LAA- Hot- Anderson bounced back from a couple of subpar outings yesterday. He threw 8 shutout IP against the Cubs, allowing 3 hits, walking no one, and striking out 10. It dropped Anderson's ERA to 2.81. While this may get him a berth on the All Star team as the Angels' representative, he has gotten a lot of good fortune. Anderson's BABIP is .229 and LOB% is 83.8%. That can explain the difference between his ERA and FIP of 4.52 and xFIP of 5.00. Anderson's 6.19 K/9 is not giving much help in that column. Anderson would be a sell high candidate if you happen to own him.
Jhonkensy Noel- OF- CLE- Rookie- Noel's calling card is raw power. At AAA Columbus he slugged 27 homers in 2023 and 18 in 284 PAs before being called up to Cleveland late last month. Yesterday in the 6th inning Noel hit his 3rd homer in 27 MLB PAs. He almost had another one earlier when he hit a ball with a 107 EV a distance of 403 ft to center field for a sac fly. Noel is now slashing .261/.333/.696. Plate discipline is an issue that hasn't had much of an impact on his results but will eventually. Before yesterday Noel had a 55.1% chase rate and 19.3% SwStr%. When he hits the ball it can go a long way. Cleveland needs power so are likely to take a long look at him. If Noel can keep his average near where it is he will be valuable. His power will still be an asset.
