Brenton Doyle- OF- COL- Hot- Doyle went 3-for-4 with 2 homers, 3 runs, 3 RBI, a steal, and a walk. He has 9 homers, only one fewer than the 10 he hit in his rookie season in 2023. Doyle has improved his plate discipline, lowering his chase rate from 31.7% to 28.2% and his SwStr% from 17.5% to 13.4%. He is slashing .260/.323/.408 with 20 steals in 329 PAs. That is a marked improvement from 2023 when Doyle slashed .203/.250/.343 with 22 steals in 431 PAs. He is contributing in multiple categories now.
James Wood- OF- WAS- Rookie- Wood had a successful MLB debut, getting a base hit in his first AB. Overall in the game he was 1-for-4 with a walk and strikeout. Wood also reached on an error when a throw got past the first baseman. He was on third with 2 outs in the 9th representing the winning run when Tyrone Taylor made a superb defensive play to take the winning hit away from Jacob Young. Wood looked at ease and in this ultra small sample size there was nothing to dispel the prospect hype.
Josh Hader- RP- HOU- Stats- Hader picked up his 13th save of the season yesterday. He also gave up his 6th homer in his 37.2 IP of work. It was the second home run Hader gave up in his last 3 appearances. There is some similarity with his 2022 season. Hader's ERA of 3.82 is above his FIP (2.92) and xFIP (2.26.) Two years ago he had a 5.22 ERA with a 3.45 FIP and 2.94 xFIP. Hader has a 1.43 HR/9 in 2024, extremely close to his 1.44 in 2022. Even if he keeps the disparity between ERA and FIP/xFIP, Hader is on pace to pitch more innings than he has in any season since 2019. His K/9 is a mind boggling 14.34, giving him almost as much help in the K column as a starter. With the Astros surging, save opportunities should be coming often. Hader has had some ERA issues before, but they don't cancel his other contributions.
Jeremy Pena- SS- HOU- Hot- Pena hit his 6th homer of the year in a 1-for-3 day. Over his last 8 games, Pena has gone 9-for-29 with a homer, 4 walks, 5 runs, 8 RBI, and only 2 strikeouts. For the season, Pena is slashing .277/.320/.385 with 6 homers and 10 steals. A two-week stretch in June when he went 2-for-32 depressed his average. Other than that Pena has been consistent this season.
Bryse Wilson- P- MIL- Cold- Wilson seems to do much better as a follower than a starter. After getting charged with 5 runs in 4 IP last night he has given up 20 ERs in 17 IP in his last 4 starts, all of which came after he had appeared as a follower. In those games he allowed 5 ERs across 22.1 IP. This is starting to look like a trend and if Wilson is a follower his next time out (although it will be at the Dodgers) he could be worth streaming.
