Jon Gray- P- TEX- Hot- Gray gave up 9 runs in his previous disastrous outing. He bounced back in a big way yesterday, blanking the Royals for 6 IP, allowing 2 hits, walking none, and striking out 3. Gray had outstanding command, tossing 51 of 72 pitches for strikes. The bad outing was an outlier.
Francisco Alvarez- C- NYM- Hot-Alvarez went 2-for-3 with a walk and solo homer yesterday. He is slashing .284/.337/.455 with 3 homers in 95 PAs. Alvarez is working on a 5-game hitting streak in which he has gone 10-for-19 with 2 homers, 3 runs, and 6 RBI. The games have all been on the road, in Texas and at Wrigley Field. He started slow after coming off the IL, but is scorching now. In the 4 games before yesterday Alvarez had a 97.2 EV and 63.6% HardHit%. Prior to that his EV was 88.3 and HardHit% was 35.8%. Alvarez is getting back to the Statcast numbers he had in 2023 and his increase in BABIP from .222 to .349 has resulted in the surge in average. Alvarez is looking like he is living up to his potential.
Jake Cronenworth- 2B- SD- Hot- Cronenworth "only" went 1-for-4 with a run yesterday. That was after stringing together 6 straight hits over his previous 2 games. Overall, he went 7-for-10 with 2 homers in those 2 games. For the season Cronenworth is slashing .266/.329/.461 with 12 homers. His EV is at a career high 90.0 and HardHit% is 39.2%, higher than any season as a full time player. Cronenworth is on pace to beat his career high of 21 homers from 2021.
Jared Jones- P- PIT- Hot- Jones tossed his 9th quality start in 15 outings this season, holding the Rays to 2 runs on 3 hits and 3 walks while striking out 8 in 7 IP. He has an ERA of 3.66, well in line with his FIP of 3.81 and xFIP of 3.56. Jones owns a K/9 of 9.73 and BB/9 so has shown good control and an ability to miss bats. He may not have the same spotlight as other rookie members of the Pittsburgh rotation but is showing solid results.
Randal Grichuk- OF- ARI- Stats- Grichuk is slashing .293/.349/.448 with 2 homers in 129 PAs. He had ankle surgery in January and may have had some aftereffects of that. Grichuk's playing time has increased in June. He has lowered his chase rate to 28.8% and his SwStr% to 7.7%. Grichuk's EV of 90.2 and HardHIt% of 46.0% are solid. He looks ready to produce as the season continues to progress.
