JJ Bleday-Athletics-OF
JJ Bleday was 1-3 with 1 R and 1 RBI against the Orioles. He was playing every day and hitting in the middle of the order to start the year. Lately, he has been sitting more as his production has dropped. He is hitting .227 with 1 HR, 5 R, 6 RBI, and 0 SB. He has cut his strikeout rate (22% K) but has not been able to hit the ball hard (3% Barrels and 26% Hardhit). There is someone on the wire who offers more than Bleday at this point. He is a drop in leagues where he is still rostered.
Jarred Kelenic-Braves-OF
Jarred Kelenic was 1-4 with a run scored against the Guardians. Kelenic is hitting .305 with 0 HR, 7 R, 4 RBI, and 0 SB. He is in a strict platoon facing only right-handed pitchers. This has helped him hit for average but he isn't providing much fantasy value because he has 0 HR/0 SB and his counting stats are low because he has limited playing time. He also hits at the bottom of the lineup. His .486 BABIP isn't going to last all year so he is going to see his average drop. He needs to start hitting for power and stealing bases to have any fantasy value.
Gavin Lux-Dodgers-2B/SS
Gavin Lux was 1-4 with 2 K against the Blue Jays. Lux is in a platoon with Kike Hernandez. He is on the strong side of the platoon but the limited at-bats and lack of production have left Lux irrelevant in most fantasy leagues. He is hitting .187 with 0 HR, 10 R, 5 RBI, and 1 SB. His plate skills are strong (8% BB and 22% K) but he has not hit the ball hard (0 % Barrels and 35% Hardhit). He has had over 1,000 PA at the major league level and is a .248 hitter with 18 HR/15 SB over 1084 PA. It is time to move on from the thought that he can be fantasy-relevant and live up to the prospect pedigree.
Paul Goldschmidt-Cardinals-1B
Paul Goldschmidt was 0-3 with a walk against the Mets. Goldschmidt has been off to a slow start (.208 AVG with 2 HR, 12 R, 11 RBI, and 1 SB). Normally, you would write this off as a slow start and that he is going to rebound. However, he is 36 years old and has major red flags in his profile. The two biggest being an increase in strikeouts (30% K) and lack of hard contact (5% Barrels). You can't cut him because there isn't anyone on the wire with similar upside but this is a very concerning start for Goldschmidt.
Kevin Gausman-Blue Jays-SP
Kevin Gausman went 7 IP and gave up 1 ER on 5 H, 0 BB, and 5 K's against the Dodgers. Gausman has struggled this year. He had a 5.57 ERA and 1.57 WHIP before today's start and now has a 4.50 ERA and 1.36 WHIP. His strikeout rate has fallen to 19% and his 4.10 SIERA is the highest it's been since 2019. His velocity is down which is a big deal because most of his success in recent years has been on the back of his fastball and splitter combo. The splitter hasn't been as good this year which could be because of the decline of his fastball. Add in that he dealt with shoulder problems in the spring and it doesn't look good for Gausman. He needs to figure it out fast. Gausman's next start will be on the road against the Nationals.
