Sean Murphy- C- ATL- Hot- Murphy didn't need any time to adjust to being back in the starting lineup yesterday. He went 2-for-4 with a walk and RBI. Murphy had been relegated to bench availability for over a week due to a hamstring injury. He had made three appearances between starts. Murphy is slashing .290/.388/.531 with 12 homers in 240 PAs. He is definitely enjoying Atlanta as his home slash line is .327/.408/.573. Murphy has hit an equal number of homers on the road as at home. His EV is at 92.5, up from 88.7 last year and his HardHit% has likewise increased, from 41.1% to 47.0%. Murphy has played in 59 of the Braves' 77 games so he won't hit the 148 games he played with the A's in 2022. However, if his recent injury is his last he will still end up putting up excellent offensive numbers, probably surpassing what he did in Oakland.
Tyler Glasnow- P- TB- Hot- Glasnow made an adjustment to his delivery after his past start, which was his worst of the season. The result was a dominating performance, with Glasnow striking out 12 of the 19 batters he faced in his 5 IP. His fastball topped out at 98.5 mph and he got 26 swinging strikes. Still, it took him 89 pitches to get through those 5 IP. Although Glasnow walked just one he threw 34 balls. Even when he is at the top of his game you can't expect a quality start. He can be lights out while he's in there, but it might not be that long. He is still working his way back from Tommy John surgery.
Yerry Rodriguez- RP- TEX- Cold- Rodriguez was called up from AAA Round Rock to fill the setup role of the injured Jose LeClerc. He failed in that yesterday, allowing 2 hits and walking one while getting charged with a run that also gave him a blown save. Rodriguez has not been able to translate the strikeouts he has shown in the minors to his limited MLB opportunity. His wildness has come with him, however. At Round Rock Rodriguez had a K/9 of 12.00 and BB/9 of 6.43. In 6 IP for the Rangers he has a 4.50 K/9 and 4.50 BB/9. Only 8 of his 13 pitches yesterday were for strikes. If Rodriguez could harness his control and miss some bats he would be in a position to pick up some holds for a division-leading team. He doesn't seem to be there, but it is a small sample size.
Johan Oviedo- P- PIT- Hot- Johan Oviedo tossed his 8th quality start in 16 outings. He has thrown 2 in a row and 4 in his last 5 starts. Yesterday Oviedo allowed 1 run on 6 hits while walking none and striking out 6 in 7 IP. Unfortunately, he was tagged with the loss and his record is now 3-8. Oviedo has had tough luck, with a 3-4 record in his quality starts. His ERA is at 4.06, with a 3.84 FIP and 4.47 xFIP. Oviedo has a low 0.71 HR/9, but posted an 0.80 last year, so his FIP is likely more representative of his underlying performance than his xFIP. His K/9 of 8.12 is decent but his SwStr% of 10.9% shows that he doesn't miss that many bats. Oviedo also has a BB/9 of 3.55, but he has only walked 5 in his last 5 starts covering 30.1 IP. He has improved his control, which is a good sign. If only his teammates would score more runs for him.
Jeimer Candelario- 3B- WAS- Hot- Candelario homered for the second straight game, going 3-for-5 with a double, the homer, 3 runs, and 3 RBI. He is now slashing .261/.338/.471 with 10 homers in 311 PAs. His Statcast numbers are comparable to those he posted in 2018, 2021, and 2022 when he posted homer totals in the high teens (or a pace for the high teens.) Candelario is getting rather predictable. He has value in deeper leagues. You aren't going to get anything earth-shattering from him but he is going to be consistent.
