Alex Cobb- P- SF- Hot- Cobb bounced back in strong fashion from a poor start the last time out. Last night he threw 7.2 scoreless IP against the Orioles. Cobb threw 70 of 103 pitches for strikes and allowed 5 hits, walked none, and struck out 7. His ERA is down to 2.71. Cobb's FIP is 3.42 and xFIP is 3.26. So he is overperforming a little but still turning in a solid season that at least matches his performances of the last two years.
Clay Holmes- RP- NYY- Stats- Holmes picked up his team-leading 6th save, but still exhibited control issues. He walked one while not picking up a strikeout. Only 9 of his 16 pitches were strikes. Holmes' 4.07 BB/9 and 1.36 WHIP does not make for a firm hold on the closer role.
Brent Rooker- OF- OAK- Cold- Rooker was out of the lineup yesterday, probably due to his ice cold stretch. Through May 12 he was slashing .319/.428/.673 with 11 homers in 138 PAs. Rooker had an eV of 92.9 and HardHit% of 55.4%. Starting the next day, he has slashed .150/.227/.183 and not added any homers. Some regression may be happening as his BABIP in the early range was .347 while it has been .250 in his cold stretch. Rooker still had a 90.1 EV although his HardHit% dropped to 36.1%. Rooker will still likely add some power, especially on the road. He has hit 4 homers in 99 home PAs and 7 in 105 road PAs.
Ezequiel Duran- 3B- TEX- Hot- Duran had a successful return from the IL, going 1-for-1 with 2 walks and 2 runs scored. He is slashing .307/.354/.518 with 7 homers in 147 PAs. Duran has a 91.0 EV and 48.0% HardHit%. His power is actually underperforming as his xSLG before yesterday was .541. Duran was the main fill in at SS while Corey Seager was injured. He also has appeared 6 times in LF, so he has some valuable versatility. It also helps that he is in the Texas offense.
Jeremy Pena- SS- HOU- Stats- Pena is following up on his strong rookie season with a very similar effort in 2023 but with a boost in plate discipline. He is slashing .257/.315/.440 with 8 homers in 239 PAs. Last season Pena slashed .253/289/.426 with 22 homers in 558 PAs. He has increased his BB% from 3.9% to 5.4%. Pena has 6 steals compared with 11 for all of last season but has been caught 5 times in 2023. His EV and HardHit% are down slightly but his chase rate and SwStr% are down while his Contact% is up. There is no sophomore slump happening here.
