Adolis Garcia- OF- TEX- Stats- Garcia went 1-for-4 with a walk, 2 runs, and a RBI in last night's game. He is slashing .244/.307/.479 with 8 homers and 33 RBI in 137 PAs. Garcia has improved his underlying metrics across the board form last year. His chase rate has plunged from 40.3% to 28.0%. His SwStr% has dropped from 16.7% to 12.5%. Contact% is up from 68.6% to 73.0%. Garcia has seen increases in EV from 92.1 to 92.7, HardHit% from 47.4% to 51.6%, and Barrel% from 12.9% to 14.3%. His average has been held down by a .244 BABIP. Garcia has increased his BB% from 6.1% to 8.8% and K% has gone down from 27.9% to 22.0%. In this early part of the season, Garcia has been putting up elite metrics.
Andrew Chafin- RP- ARI- Cold- In a battle of closer meltdowns, Chafin went first, getting charged with 3 runs on 4 hits without retiring a batter. It was Chafin's second blown save while he has picked up 5 saves for the surprising Diamondbacks. His ERA rose from 2.13 to 4.26. His xFIP is still at 2.36, but it is a small sample size of 12.2 IP, so wild swings can happen. Chafin has also seems to have challenges with pitching on consecutive days. He has allowed 7 hits and 6 runs in 2.1 IP in the 4 games he has pitched after appearing the day before. Yesterday Chafin was making his 4th appearance in 5 days.
Ezequiel Tovar- SS- COL- Hot- Tovar went 3-for-4 with a double and homer yesterday. It was his first 3-hit game of his young MLB career. Tovar came into the season as a highly-rated prospect but has had a slow start. Tovar is only 21 and is slated to occupy the SS position for the Rockies for some time to come. He is slashing .236/.283/.387 now but hit 15 homers in 353 PAs across 3 levels in 2022. Tovar also stole 17 bases. He is expected to have above average power, average, and speed and develop into a solid MLB SS.
Matt Mervis- 1B- CHC- Rookie- Mervis has started his MLB career with a 2-game hitting streak. He has gone 1-for-4 in each of his first two games. Mervis brings a portfolio of power from the minors. Last season he slugged a total of 36 homers across three levels. He has struck out 5 times in these two games, but that is an aberration from his track record. He had a Batting EYE of 0.95 at AAA Iowa before being called up. Mervis walked 18 times and struck out 19 in 112 PAs. He has also hit for average at his minor league stops since last year. Mervis is a better option at 1B for the Cubs than Eric Hosmer, but he may split some time there with Trey Mancini. When he is playing, he should produce.
Alex Cobb- P- SF- Hot- Cobb threw 7 shutout IP yesterday. He allowed 5 hits and 2 walks while striking out 5. Cobb's ERA is down to 2.01 and his FIP is 2.96. Heading into yesterday's start his GB% was 60.8%, very close to his 61.5% in 2022. Cobb had a 3.73 ERA last year, but his FIP was 2.80. Instead of underperforming like he did last year, he is overperforming a little. Even with some regression, his numbers will be solid.
