Eloy Jimenez- OF- CHW- FYI- Jimenez went 1-for-4 in his return from the IL. Jimenez has been plagued by injury since his rookie 2019 season, when he finished 4th in Rookie of the Year voting. In 2022 he had 327 PAs and slashed .295/.358/.500 with 16 homers and 54 RBI. Jimenez had an EV of 92.8 and HardHit% of 54.9%. When he is in the lineup, Jimenez produces a lot. His problem is staying healthy.
Josh Staumont- RP- KC- Rise Value- Staumont is a player that has value in a specific set of circumstances. In a deep league that counts holds, he can give a boost. Staumont was called up yesterday after throwing 4 IP in 4 games at AAA Omaha. He didn't allow a run and struck out 7 while walking 1. Control was an issue last year for Staumont. He posted a 6.93 BB/9 in 37.2 IP with KC. The Royals think he is back to the form that saw him earn 16 holds and post a 2.88 ERA with a 9.87 K/9 in 2021. Staumont threw a perfect inning of relief last night, striking out 1 of the 3 batters he faced. For him to reach his potential, KC will have to have enough opportunities for Staumont to earn a hold.
Louie Varland- P- MIN- Rookie- Varland threw a quality start in his first appearance of 2023. He allowed 3 runs on 6 hits and 1 walk while striking out 8 in 6 IP. All of the runs came on solo homers. Varland did make 5 starts for the Twins last year, covering 26 IP. He had a 3.81 ERA. Varland has missed a lot of bats in the minors, with a K/9 no lower than 10.20 at any of his stops. Varland may not stay in the rotation this time up, but he projects to a solid mid-rotation starter.
Travis Jankowski- OF- TEX- Hot- Jankowski made his 4th start in 5 games the Rangers have played this week. It looks like the lefthanded hitter is settling into a LF platoon with Robbie Grossman. Jankowski has superior speed. He has 2 steals in a small sample size of 17 PAs and is slashing .333/.412/.600. Jankowski has benefited from a BABIP of .385. His EV is 86.0 and his HardHit% is just 10.0%. These are in a very small sample size (just to remind you.) The way Texas is using him, Jankowski will add some steals. The rest of his contribution is up in the air.
Rowdy Tellez- DH- MIL- Hot- Tellez slugged 2 homers in San Diego last night and has hit 4 in his last 4 games. Tellez has found his power stroke and is demonstrating why he was projected to hit 32 homers this season. His average of .214 is mightily impacted by his BABIP of .138. Tellez had a very unlucky BABIP of .215 last year but this is ridiculous. Regression to the mean will be his friend. Tellez also has a K% of 20.0%, relatively low for a slugger of his caliber. He pairs that with a BB% of 12.0% so his outlook is good as the season progresses.
