Get the hype train ready as Bo Bichette was 3-for-5 with his first career HR. It can be quite challenging for rookies to live up to expectations, and the jury is still out if Bichette will; however, it's a very positive sign that he's batting leadoff for the Jays. Oftentimes rookies will be relegated to the back of the lineup, which automatically hinders their value. Bichette needs to be owned in all formats, but temper expectations as he'll see some serious ups and downs for the rest of the season.
Aroldis Chapman picked up the save yesterday, despite allowing a run, a hit and walking two. After last year's monster season, Chapman has regressed meaningfully to a career-worst SIERA. He's still a solid closing option, but is no longer in the top three closers in the game. His K rate is down tremendously, which limits his value severely as fantasy owners are accustomed to a 40% K rate. He's worth exploring in trades; if you can get elite value for him, deal him, or if you can pick him up as a bottom tier closer from an owner that sees him allowing a lot of runs, do it.
Prior to yesterday, Masahiro Tanaka claimed he altered the grip on his splitter, which showed mixed results as he lasted just 4 IP while allowing 2 ER over 82 pitches. Something is clearly off with Tanaka who has taken a large step back from a strong 2018. In my opinion, he can't be trusted in any fantasy format until he puts together a few solid outings (or has a cupcake matchup). His SIERA and SwStr% are career worsts, and clearly the Yankees aren't afraid to pull him early to get to their monster bullpen if needed, which will continue to decrease his fantasy value.
Gordon Beckham (yes, that Gordon Beckham) had a great day, going 2-for-4 with 3 RBI. Unfortunately it only increased his batting average to .204. The former uber prospect has been among the game's worst players this year, as his wRC+ of 62 over 183 PA is a staggering number. All that said, Beckham clearly doesn't belong in any fantasy lineups.
Justin Upton was 0-for-3 with a walk. Thru 126 PA, Upton's results have been sub-par, but his peripherals look similar to last year when he sported a 124 wRC+. This could represent a buy-low opportunity as you're approaching your trade deadlines. It's a small sample, but Upton looks like a solid OF3 that you may be able to acquire for less.
