Starling Marte- OF- PIT- Idea- Marte is poised to take advantage of the reverse splits of both himself and Sal Romano. Marte's slash line against RH pitching is .304/.369/.418 while Romano is .285/.371/.526 against RH hitting. Value play- Draft Kings salary $3700
Kyle Schwarber- OF- CHN- Stats- Schwarber went 1-for-3 with a walk yesterday and has not struck out in 2 of his last 3 games. He has more than 1 K in 2 of his last 9 games. That trend is a positive one. Two things have killed Schwarber's average this season, leaving him at just a hair above the Mendoza line at .201. One is his K%, which is still above 30% at 30.4%. The other is plain bad luck, with a BABIP of .234. If Schwarber gets his strikeouts down a bit, with his power that has produced a career high 24 homers, some regression to the mean in 2018 will improve his value substantially.
Kolten Wong- 2B- STL- Cold- Wong went 0-for-3 yesterday and has failed to record a hit in 3 of his last 5 games. There may be some late-season regression to the mean kicking in, as Wong has a .357 BABIP, well above his .294 career average. His FB% has dropped from 34.1% in 2016 to 31.6% this year. Wong's Batting EYE has dipped slightly from .65 to .61. Most of his improvement this season appears to be the result of better luck. Heading into 2018 I wouldn't overpay for his .300+ average from this year.
Jameson Taillon- P- PIT- Hot- After walking 12 in 14 IP across his previous 3 starts, Taillon only allowed one base on balls in his 6 IP quality start yesterday. Taillon's performance goes where his sense of home plate is. Yesterday he threw 66 of his 96 pitches for strikes. In those 3 games before that one only 176 of his 294 pitches were strikes. Taillon started the season with 3 solid starts but then started sliding before he went on the DL to have treatment for cancer. Since coming back he has been wildly inconsistent. In addition to the cancer fight, this is Taillon's second season back after missing two full years to Tommy John surgery. He was a top prospect with the Pirates and will get every opportunity to show that he will gain consistency next spring. Keep a watch on him to see if he can put together more efficient stretches the rest of this year and in the spring.
Rhys Hoskins- OF- PHI- Hot- We've been talking a lot about Hoskins lately but that's because he's given us a lot to talk about. Last night he hit his 12th homer of the season (in an even 100 PAs) in a 3-for-3 game. Hoskins owns a .318 average despite a .268 BABIP. Of his 27 hits, 15 have been for extra bases. He has a 13.0% BB% and only 17.0% K%. Hoskins is bringing his power and plate discipline game that he had in the minors to the majors and with a 44.6% Hard%, his power looks to be real.
