Jose Quintana, Chicago White Sox - Jose Quintana's final pitching line looks like he had a solid bounce back outing Tuesday against the Rays but he did pitch around a lot of base runners. While he got shelled in his last two starts he hadn't been walking batters but regressed hard on that this game walking four in just 5.1 innings. All in all he allowed just four hits and one run while striking out seven batters and getting the ND. As a Quintana owner I've been desperately trying to figure out what to do with him but there are some signs for optimism here. He's got a career high strikeout rate punching out just over a batter per nine and his hard hit rate has also dropped after jumping to 32% last season.
Drew Pomeranz, Boston Red Sox - Drew Pomeranz picked up his 6th win of the season but boy-oh-boy did he struggle just getting through 5.0 innings as he topped out at over 120 pitches. Pomeranz has never been one for efficiency but this feels crazy as he almost wasn't even make it towards getting the win. This is Pomeranz's third straight win and he's been on a tear striking out batters posting over a 10 K/9 in each of his last four starts helping lead to his career high 11.41 K/9. It's not always pretty, but Pomeranz is on a great team with a great offense and they can bail him out on any given night.
Masahiro Tanaka, New York Yankees - Masahiro Tanaka got crushed by the Red Sox tonight allowing three homers in 5.0 innings and he's now given up 11 homers over his last four starts. His career average for HR/FB is in the 15% ballpark but this year for Tanaka it's up to 23.3%. In his last five starts he's allowed under 5 runs just once and has been absolutely crushed every time out for the righty. Interestingly enough though he does have a 13.1% swinging strike rate which is the best he's been since his rookie season.
Jonathan Schoop, Baltimore Orioles - Jonathan Schoop hit a pair of homers Tuesday bringing his season to 10 and after a really long homer drought he now has five in his last 12 games. His triple slash is up to .288/.336/.525 with a wRC+ and is an extremely solid option at second base especially if he can keep his strikeout rate in the 18% range rather than up over 20% like it has been every year for his career. His swinging strike rate has dropped 4% so I think he'll actually be able to sustain that lower K%, provided that he continues to make better contact on pitches that are in the zone.
Bradley Zimmer, Cleveland Indians - Bradley Zimmer launched his 4th homer of the season Tuesday in Colorado and continues to crush the ball with a .314 ISO and a .275/.351/.588 triple slash through his first 57 plate appearances as a big leaguer. He's striking out a ton at 31.6% but he's hitting the ball hard enough that he is able to withstand that high of a mark (45% hard hit rate). Zimmer is playing well enough that I think he sticks around on the team for the rest of the year and his fantasy outlook is positive with a nice power and speed combo.
