Daniel Norris(SP-DET): Norris won after allowing three runs on eight hits and one walk with eight strikeouts over six innings vs. the Rays. The left-hander hasn't allowed more than three earned runs in a start since May 19, a time period spanning five starts. The swing-and-miss stuff is returning after he battled a period of dead arm to begin the year, but the key to him unlocking his elite potential rests with his control, as his 55 percent first pitch strike rate and 10 percent walk rate continue fuel early rises in pitch counts. He's a must-own in all formats for the upside, but still a streaming option in standard formats until he can harness his control.
Trey Mancini(1B/OF-BAL): Mancini went 2-for-4 with a solo homer vs. the Cardinals. It's finally happening--Mancini is receiving regular at-bats. And the youngster is taking full advantage, posting a .303/.347.549 line through 190 plate appearances. While his 24 percent HR/FB rate is likely to regress, his batted ball profile, elite batted ball speed and home park should mitigate the regression so that the rate will settle in the upper teens. The swing-and-miss elements and batted ball profile do not support a .368 BABIP, but Mancini can still post a mark that'll enable him to carry a .275+ batting average. Buy.
Joe Biagini(SP-TOR): Joe Biagini lost after allowing seven runs (six earned) on eight hits and one walk with no strikeouts over one inning of work Friday vs. the White Sox. This was only the second time in eight starts that Biagini has allowed more than three earned runs. Overall, the right-hander has dealt in 2017, posting a 59 percent groundball rate, 21 percent strikeout rate, and a 25 percent hard hit rate. He has actually pitched better in the rotation than he did out of the pen, but a below-average strand rate has masked his effectiveness. However, with Aaron Sanchez making it through his first bullpen since May 19, Biagini's days in the rotation may be numbered. Owners are advised to hold for the next two weeks but to make contingency plans should Biagini find himself bumped to the pen.
Yan Gomes (C-CLE): Gomes went 2-for-4 with a run scored and three RBIs against the Twins. The streaky Gomes posted a .376 wOBA in May sandwiched between .253 and .282 marks. What has been a constant this season is the right-hander's improved plate discipline, as he hasn't posted an EYE below .38 in any month despite entering the season with a career EYE below .20. With improved health and a more discipline approach, Gomes has returned as a viable number two catcher in standard leagues.
Ben Gamel(OF-SEA): The left-on-left matchup on tap against Martin Perez may scare some players off of the hot Mr. Gamel, but the numbers suggest that this could be the time to invest heavily. Gamel has posted a .359 wOBA vs. left-handers this season, displaying better power numbers on the road. Perez has shown reverse splits, allowing a .409 wOBA (.526 slugging) to left-handers this season. Gamel has solidified himself at the top of the lineup, and with his elite contact skills facing off against the poor swing-and-miss stuff of Perez, the ingredients are here for a big day.
