Dylan Bundy, SP, BAL
Bundy recorded his 7th win of the season on Wednesday, but it wasn't the strongest outing as he allowed 5 runs, 4 earned, in 5 IP while walking 3 and striking out 4. It was only the 2nd time in 14 starts that Bundy allowed more than 3 ER's in a game, but at the same time, his ERA is a mediocre 4.75 over his last 6 outings. Overall, Bundy's low K% (17.8%) and low GB% (31.9%) have led to an unappealing 5.08 xFIP. To be fair, he has been inducing a lot of pop-ups, but that 3.29 ERA doesn't look like it can last unless Bundy suddenly finds more strikeout stuff.
Corey Kluber, SP, CLE
Kluber allowed 2 ER's on 4 hits in 7 IP against the Dodgers on Wednesday, striking out 10 and walking 1. That line looks pretty good, but it could have been even better considering that the Dodgers' two-run 2nd inning consisted of two infield hits and a steal of home. Kluber's 4.15 ERA still doesn't look special, but since coming off the DL at the beginning of June, he has posted a 2.37 ERA and a monstrous 28:4 K:BB ratio across 19 IP. The Klubot looks like he's in ace form right now.
Francis Martes, SP, HOU
Martes made his first big-league start (2nd appearance) against the Rangers on Wednesday, and he made the most of it, allowing 1 ER in 5 IP while striking out 7 and walking 2. Martes posted excellent strikeout rates throughout the minors, and even picked it up a notch in AAA with a 10.58 K/9 through 32.1 AAA innings this season. His walk-rates at the higher levels however have not been as promising and that culminated in a 7.79 BB/9 in AAA. Those trends have continued so far at the onset of his MLB career, as he already struck out 9 and walked 4 in 8.2 IP through his first two big-league appearances. Obviously, the strikeout ability gives Martes a high upside, but don't ignore the potential control problems.
Ervin Santana, SP, MIN
Santana struggled on Wednesday allowing 5 ER's on 9 hits in 5 IP, but still owns a sparkling 2.56 ERA for the season. Believe me, I don't like saying bad things about pitchers who have three complete-game shutouts and 6 starts of 6 shutout innings or more out of 14 starts, but what can I do, it's my job. Santana's 6.44 K/9 and 3.22 B/9 are subpar, and so is his 1.23 HR/9. His BABIP is at .171 and his LOB% is 87.1%. None of it makes any sense. His xFIP is 4.86 so regression must come. See if you can sell high before it's too late.
Jordan Montgomery, SP, NYY
Montgomery has been hot recently with a 1.50 ERA and 24:5 K:BB through his last 4 starts covering 24 IP. He'll have a nice matchup on Wednesday against the A's who have the 4th highest K% in MLB at 24.9%. It also helps that the game is in Oakland; Montgomery has a 3.21 ERA with just 1 HR allowed in 28.0 road innings this year. DraftKings Value Play Salary $8,600.
