Trea Turner(INF-WAS): Nationals shortstop Trea Turner went 0-for-5, moving his season line to .241/.270/.412 with five homers and 11 steals in 40 games. Pitchers are adjusting to Turner with deployment and sequencing, and as a result, the speedster has struggled with breaking stuff low and inside and fastballs high and outside. The Nationals are working with him on adjusting, and he has the pedigree and the leash to make it happen. He's going to develop, his BABIP is going to positively regress, and when it all comes together in the second half, look for Turner to deliver first round numbers,
Robert Gsellman(P-NYM): Mets right-hander Robert Gsellman won after allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits (one homer) and two walks with five strikeouts over seven innings vs. the Brewers. He was then promptly demoted to the bullpen after the game to make room in the rotation for Steven Matz and Seth Lugo. Ugh. Gsellman has struggled to miss bats, but he has also been plagued by a .329 BABIP, a 59 percent strand rate, and a 14 percent HR/FB rate despite an elite ground ball rate and average hard hit rate. He was starting to put things together with his deep arsenal, too; while the news is frustrating for his owners, the odds of him reclaiming a rotation spot within the next month are high enough for me to hold in deeper mixed leagues.
Brandon Maurer(RP-SD): Padres right-hander Brandon Mauer picked up the save (his seventh) after striking out one in a spotless ninth inning against the Cubs. Mauer has been one of the unluckiest pitchers of 2017 as indicated by his 6.00 ERA/2.77 xFIP. He has actually increased his ground ball rate, decreased his hard hit rate, and improved his BB:K ratio from 2016. The Padres know this, and are giving Brad Hand the occasional save chance in order to showcase him for a trade. While Mauer also could get moved, he's more likely to receive more save chances for the remainder of 2017. Buy.
Hunter Renfroe(OF-SD): Padres right-fielder Hunter Renfroe went 1-for-4 with a grand slam and a walk vs. the Cubs. The power is for real, as Renfroe continues to post a 35 percent hard hit rate, a 45 percent fly ball rate, and a 49 percent pull rate to make up for his average batted ball speed. The average, while likely to hover below league-average, looks underrepresented too given his batted ball profile. With positive regression in his numbers and development through the summer months likely, look for Renfroe as a must-start option in all standard leagues.
Tommy Joseph(1B-PHI): Tommy Joseph ($3700) and the Phillies right-handers make for great tournament plays on FanDuel for today's DFS action. Justin Nicolino has allowed a .349 wOBA and 16 of 18 homers to right-handers in his career and has scuffled against them out of the gate in 2017. Joseph has hit five homers in 38 at-bats against lefties this season, but his .095 BABIP against them has his overall numbers looking less than attractive. The ownership could be low because of the surface stats and the price, creating a contrarian opportunity for tournaments.
