Jonathan Villar-Brewers-2B/SS
Jonathan Villar was 1-3 with a run scored and a walk against the Blue Jays. Villar is hitting .222 with 5 HR/23 R/24 RBI/12 SB. The average is not where you would like it to be but he is contributing in the counting stats. His strikeout rate has risen to 29% from 26% last year. His OBP has fallen from .369 to .289 this year due to the lack of contact and a drop in his walk rate from 12% to 9%. He is hitting the ball hard at 33% Hard contact but too many of them are on the ground (63%) for him to do any real damage. Villar contributed in every category last year making him one of the most valuable players in all of fantasy. This year his skills suggest that he will only be contributing in steals unless he changes his batted ball profile.
Tanner Roark-Nationals-SP
Tanner Roark went 7 IP and gave up 0 ER on 8 H, 0 BB, and 8 K's against the Mariners. Roark has a 4.32 ERA (4.56 FIP) through his first ten starts. Roark's ERA over the past four seasons looks like a yo-yo. He is extremely dependent upon batted ball luck given that he doesn't miss many bats (19% K, 8.7% SwStr). He isn't likely as bad as his ERA but he also isn't as good as the 2.83 ERA he posted last year. Batters are not going out of the zone against Roark. He has seen a 5% reduction in his O-swing%, which is a big deal for someone who relies heavily on command and sequencing. He has the skills to be a league average fantasy starter on a good team.
Tyler Chatwood-Rockies-SP
Tyler Chatwood went 7 IP and gave up 0 ER on 1 H, 4 BB, and 8 K's against the Phillies. Chatwood has a 4.50 ERA (4.66 FIP) through his first ten starts. His strikeout rate is below league average at 18% and his walk rate is high at 12% for someone who doesn't miss many bats. The good news is that he is still getting 56% GB, which gives a boost to his overall skill set. He is only viable in leagues with daily moves in which you can stream him on the road. He has a 2.22 ERA on the road over the past two seasons (105 IP).
Dansby Swanson-Braves-SS
Dansby Swanson was 0-1 as a pinch hitter against the Pirates. Swanson is hitting .203 with 4 HR and 17 RBI through 42 games. Swanson's have declined in his sophomore season. His strikeout rate has spiked to 27% and his contact within the zone has fallen from 86% to 80%. He is really struggling against the fastball. He is hitting .167 with a 16% SwStr against four-seam fastballs. Swanson needs to show that he can handle major league velocity or they will continue to feed him a healthy diet of the hard stuff. Maybe skipping Triple-A was not the best decision in regards to his development.
