Jon Gray (SP-COL): Jon Gray struck out 16 in a four-hit, complete-game shutout at home vs. the Padres. What a breakout season 2016 has been for Gray, who now has a 172:53 K:BB ratio with a 3.57 xFIP through 158 2/3 innings. The development of his secondary offerings, especially the curveball, along with the improvement in his first pitch strike percentage have fueled the breakout and have enabled him to succeed at home. He may drop into the middle rounds thanks to the Coors stigma, which will create a great buying opportunity 2017.
Tom Murphy (C-COL): Tom Murphy went 2-for-4 with two homers and five RBIs. Murphy posted 1.008 OPS with 19 homers in 80 games at Triple-A prior to being summoned back to Colorado. While his high strikeout rate and flyball tendencies will continue to exert negative pressure on his AVG, Murphy should appear on plenty of sleeper lists for two-catcher leagues heading into 2017. If the Rockies give him consistent playing time, he could be one of the better value picks in the spring.
Jean Segura (2B/SS-ARI): Jean Segura went 2-for-4 with a homer, his 17th of the season. Segura is enjoying a breakout season and, thanks to the infusion of young talent up the middle, continues to fall under the radar. His .365 wOBA is 36 points higher than his previous career best thanks to a 10-percentage point spike in his hard hit rate and a .21 improvement in his EYE from 2015. He has hit 12 of his 17 homers at home and appears to be thriving in the desert. If you miss out on the big names in the middle infield, Segura should be there a few rounds later and could produce similar value.
Scooter Gennett (2B-MIL): While Ryan Braun continued to rake, Scooter Gennett went 2-for-4 with two doubles, four runs scored and two RBIs. Gennett has quietly improved across the board, moving his chase rate from 43 to 34 percent, his contact rate from 84 to 79 percent, and his hard hit rate from 22 to 29 percent while improving against left-handers. He'll be entering his age-27 season in 2017 and could make for a sneaky MI option in the later rounds in standard mixed leagues.
Roman Quinn (OF-PHI): Roman Quinn ($2200) makes for an excellent tournament play today. The speedy prospect, who posted a .823 OPS with 26 steals in 77 games, has gotten off to a solid start in the Bigs. With a spot at the top of the lineup secured, look to him for a potentially big day against Andrew Cashner, who has allowed .375 wOBA vs. lefties Add in Cashner's struggles on the road, and you have the ingredients for a huge ROI medicine from Quinn.
