Sam Dyson, RP, TEX
Dyson has so far gotten the job done for the Rangers this season but you wonder how much longer it will last. After allowing another two baserunners in a save Tuesday afternoon, Dyson now has a 1.50 WHIP over the past two months (24 appearances) with an ugly 9:9 K:BB ratio in 22.2 IP over that span. One would have to think that all of those baserunners will at some point come back to haunt him.
Hisashi Iwakuma, SP, SEA
Iwakuma has been hot over the past month, posting a 1.95 ERA and 1.03 WHIP over his past 6 starts, while not allowing a run in 14.1 IP over his past two turns. In the process, he has lowered his season ERA from 4.43 to 3.79 but there still is some reason for concern going forward. Iwakuma has seen his GB% drop to 39.2% this season after four years of hovering around the 50% mark. He has gotten lucky during his recent hot stretch with only a 5.0% HR/FB, but once that regresses back to his career norm of 13.2%, he could be in for a bit more trouble. On the plus side however, he has been striking out more batters recently (8.27 K/9 over his last 39 IP) after posting a 6.44 K/9 through his first 17 starts, which would have been a career worst.
Michael Saunders, SP, TOR
It's been a breakout season for Saunders this year, but things have come to a halt for him over the past few weeks. Since his monstrous 3 HR game against Baltimore on June 17, Saunders is hitting a mere .212 with 4 HR's in 39 games and a K% over 30%. Things have gotten worse since the all-star break, as he's hitting .156 with 26 K's in 64 AB's since that time. The slump shouldn't come as a huge surprise as his K% is elevated at 27.8% and his .377 BABIP from the first half is not likely to hold up. He should continue to hit for moderate power the rest of the way, but he has the potential to be a BA drain.
Luis Severino, SP, NYY
Severino had a rough return to the rotation, allowing 5 ER's on 7 hits in 4.1 IP to the Red Sox in his first start since May 13. He has been unlucky this season with a .331 BABIP and 19.5% HR/FB, both of which are surprising considering his excellent 26.6% Hard%, so you would have to think he'll turn it around sooner rather than later. His K% and BB% are not elite, but he does have an excellent 2.06 GB/FB ratio and has the potential to be a decent major-league pitcher.
Ian Desmond, OF, TEX
Desmond has crushed LH-pitching this season to the tune of a .372/.400/.584 slash line, and also has been dominant at home slashing .352/.390/.585. At home against a southpaw he's gone an incredible .468/.479/.809. This makes for an excellent matchup on Wednesday against Rockies LHP Jorge de la Rosa who has allowed an .847 OPS against RH-hitters this season and has actually been worse on the road with a 6.10 ERA. Value Play DraftKings $4,400.
