Vincent Velasquez-Phillies-SP
Vincent Velasquez went 6 IP and gave up 4 ER on 7 H, 4 BB, and 5 K's against the Pirates. Velasquez has a 3.34 ERA with an excellent 27.8% K. He has an average walk rate (8.5%) and his 40% FB would normally lead to a lot of damage being done against him, but his strikeout rate allows for both of those to play. Pitching in the National League has been a big boost for the young right-hander. Velasquez also has a distinct home and road split. He has a 1.74 ERA at home vs. 4.74 on the road. There is also the issue of an innings limit for Velasquez. He has now eclipsed his innings total from last season. He threw a total of 124 IP in 2013, which suggests that Velasquez could go as far as 130-140 IP.
Junior Guerra-Brewers-SP
Junior Guerra went 6.1 IP and gave up 0 ER on 5 H, 4 BB, and 2 K's against the Cubs. Guerra now has a 2.85 ERA over 94.2 IP. He has a 22% K with a 1.06 WHIP. Guerra has the ability to miss bats with his excellent split-finger and plus velocity. Guerra could really up his strikeout rate if he could up his first pitch strike %, because his 11.3% SwStr suggests a strikeout rate near 25%. Either way Guerra has turned himself into a very interesting fantasy starter. Guerra gets matched up with the Pirates at home next time out, which is not the greatest matchup, but he needs to be started.
Odubel Herrera-Phillies-OF
Odubel Herrera was 1-4 with 11th HR against the Pirates. Herrera has raised his season line to .290 with 11 HR, 35 RBI, and 14 SB. Herrera has transformed himself into an all-around fantasy player. He has the potential to have a 15 HR/25 SB season with a nice average (.290). Herrera has made nice strides this year in terms of lowering his strikeout rate and doubling his walk rate. This allows Herrera to be a consistent fantasy player and not prone to prolonged slumps.
Steven Matz-Mets-SP
Steven Matz went 6 IP and gave up 0 ER on 4 H, 2 BB, and 6 K's against the Marlins. Matz has a 3.36 ERA with a 1.24 WHIP. Matz is striking out 22.6% of batters with a 51.6% GB. Matz has shown the ability to induce weak contact, which backs up his 3.65 SIERA. Matz's SwStr is only 9.5%, but Matz has shown the ability to get strikeouts with mediocre SwStr rates. Matz does this because he gets first pitch strikes 65% of the time, which allows him to be ahead of hitters and get them to swing at his pitchers and not vice versa. Matz will be at home versus the Rockies, which is a good matchup.
DFS Value Play
Yangervis Solarte-Padres-3B
Yangervis Solarte has posted a .325 AVG. with 6 HR and 17 RBI in July. He will have the platoon advantage against RHP Aaron Sanchez. He will also get a massive park shift going from Petco to the Rogers Centre. Aaron Sanchez has been very good this year, but he has struggled with LHB over his career (.324 wOBA). DraftKings: $3,000
