Josh Tomlin-Indians-SP
Josh Tomlin went 9 IP and gave up 2 ER on 4 H, 0 BB, and 6 K in the loss to the Royals. Josh Tomlin has had a career resurgence in the second half. He has posted a 2.85 ERA over 50 IP with 44 K's. The walk rate is elite (0.66 BB/9), but he has been getting lucky with a .167 BABIP. His 4.68 FIP agrees with this assessment. You have to continue to ride him while he is hot, but he hasn't all of a sudden reinvented himself.
Kris Medlen-Royals-SP
Kris Medlen went 6.1 IP and gave up 0 ER on 5 H, 1 BB, and 0 K in the win agianst the Indians. Kris Medlen is a great story, because he has made his way back from not one, but two Tommy John surgeries. He has posted a 3.92 ERA (4.24 FIP) with 7.23 K/9. Medlen has always relied on good control and the ability to induce weak contact. His breakout 2013 is more of an aberration than a reality, just keep that in mind. Medlen pitches for a great team and therefore he should be a good source of wins down the stretch, but outside of that he is just average.
Jeff Samardzija-White Sox-SP
Jeff Samardzija went 3 IP and gave up 10 ER on 11 H, 3 BB, and 3 K in the loss to the Athletics. This was another dismal start in a dismal season for the "Shark". Samardzija has been quite the let down this year. He took a big step forward last year and finally made good on his raw talent, but has taken a step back to the old Samardzija this year. His strikeout rate has dropped to 6.97 K/9 and his walk rate has shot back up to 2.12 BB/9. His ERA currently sits at 5.27 and he will be an interesting option heading into 2016 because of his potential, but poor 2015 season.
Jake Odorizzi-Rays-SP
Jake Odorizzi went 6 IP and gave up 3 ER on 3 H, 3 BB, and 5 K in the win against the Yankees. Odorizzi has been excellent this year. He has a 3.26 ERA (3.31 FIP), with 8.09 K/9 and 2.22 BB/9. Odorizzi has shifted from a slider to a cutter, which has allowed him to induce more soft contact and pitch deeper into games. It would be nice to see his strikeout totals come back up, but at this point we have to be happy with what we have gotten from him. He looks to be a solid SP#3 heading into next year.
DFS Value Play of the Day
David Peralta-Diamondbacks-OF
David Peralta has flown under the radar all season long. He has a .383 wOBA and .220 ISO against RHP. He also has been much better at home .396 wOBA and .223 ISO. He gets to face Andrew Cashner, who has given up a .380 wOBA to LHB. DraftKings Value: $3,300
