Carlos Rodon-White Sox-SP
Carlos Rodon went 6 IP and gave up 0 ER on 2 H, 0 BB, and 6 K in the win against the Cubs. Rodon has shown flashes of greatness and flashes that he is far from a finished product. The stuff is there with the mid 90's fastball and devastating slider, but he needs to work on command and the development of his change-up. He is getting 9.25 K/9, which is excellent, but the 5.22 BB/9 leaves a lot to be desired. In dynasty and keeper leagues Rodon is a future star in the making, but if you're in a re-draft league, Rodon isn't going to help you much outside of strikeouts. I wish there were signs pointing towards a dominating second half, but there isn't. Expect a roller coaster ride the rest of the way.
Mookie Betts-Red Sox-OF
Mookie Betts was 1-4 with his 10th HR of the season in the loss to the Yankees. Just when the hype died down and it looked like Betts was overmatched at the major league level, he goes on a hot streak and has raised his season line to .275/10/42 with 13 SB. Betts is playing his way into fantasy stardom. He does a little bit of everything: average, power, and speed. Betts makes great contact at 87% and should challenge .300 the rest of the way and if you combine this with his power and speed, you have a fantasy star.
J.D. Martinez-Tigers-OF
J.D. Martinez was 2-5 with a homerun his 25th of the year in the win against the Twins. Martinez is slashing .289/25/59 over 84 games. It doesn't take much to see the impact that Miguel Cabrera has had on Martinez. Their swings are very similar and it is no coincidence that Martinez starts having great success with a change in mechanics and approach (all-field). Martinez does strikeout too much (26%), which will make it hard for him to hit for a high average, but the power is legit. Martinez is on pace for a .275/35/100 season, which would be elite numbers.
Michael Pineda-Yankees-SP
Michael Pineda went 6.2 IP and gave up 1 ER on 7 H, 0 BB, and 6 K in the win against Red Sox. Pineda is sporting a 3.76 ERA and a 2.56 FIP. You must be wondering why his FIP is a full run lower than his ERA? He has been bitten by a bit of bad luck in terms of BABIP (.347). Going forward we should see that normalize and Pineda's ability to dominate (9.48 K/9 and 1.17 BB/9) shine through. Now is not the time to panic on Pineda.
DFS Value Play of the Day
Jon Lester-Cubs-SP
The White Sox are last in the league verse left-handed pitching in almost every offensive category (.257 wOBA, 56 wRC+, .082 ISO, 22.4% K). Lester has pitched well lately and his 8.80 K/9 and 47.6% GB rate matches up perfectly with the White Sox. Look for Lester to dominate the Sox. Fanduel Value: $8,900
