Ben Paulsen- 1B- COL- Idea- The Rockies will face Tim Hudson today. He turns 40 on July 14th. He carries a slash line this year of .279/.359/.406 against LH hitting. Paulsen's slash line against RH pitching is .293/.363/.565 and all 5 of his homers have come in his 102 ABs against them. Give the edge to Paulsen in this matchup. Value play- FanDuel salary $2700
Taylor Jungmann- P- MIL- Rookie- Jungmann threw 5 shutout innings yesterday but didn't factor into the decision as the Brewers lost 2-0. He has pitched well since being called up from AAA Colorado Springs. Jungmann owns a luck-influenced 2.74 ERA, but his FIP of 3.19 isn't too bad. He has a K/9 of 7.43 after striking out 5 yesterday. Jungmann walked 2, to bring his BB/9 up to 2.35. Control will be a big part of his effectiveness. His BB/9 has been over 4.00 at AAA in each of the past two seasons. If he can keep it where it is now for the Brewers he can succeed.
Jeurys Familia- RP- NYN- Hot- Familia is now one of 8 closers with 20 saves so far this year after nailing down yesterday's game. His FIP of 3.02 indicates some luck in his 1.34 ERA. However he owns a K/9 of 9.62 and BB/9 of 2.67 that indicate some solid work going on. Familia is not showing signs of weakness and has been used for more than 1 IP often enough that his overall numbers are an asset, not just his saves.
AJ Pollock- OF- ARI- Stats- Pollock went 2-for-4 with a walk yesterday. He also picked up his 15th steal of the season. Pollock's BABIP now stands at .345, but that's only a point better than the .344 he posted last season. His combination of power (9 homers) and speed give him across the board value. The speed is what makes his .307 average more likely to be sustainable than it would be for an average player.
James Shields- P- SD- Cold- Shields got tagged for 7 runs on 9 hits and 2 walks while striking out 7 in 4 IP yesterday. It was the 3rd time in his last 4 appearances that he has failed to record a quality start. It also bumped Shields' ERA to 4.24 from 3.75. Although he has struck out 24 batters in 22.1 IP during this stretch he has also walked 10. Shields needs to rein in those free passes to regain the success he had earlier this season.
