Sometimes early in the season people make quick judgements on players based on small sample sizes. The following are a few players whose performances so far have been a bit surprising, but not very likely to continue.
Eddie Butler, SP,COL
Butler shutout the Giants over 5.2 innings on Monday, giving him a record of 1-0 with a 1.64 ERA in his first two starts of the season, and making him a prime candidate to be a streaming bust in the near future. His 6:10 K:BB ratio in 11.0 IP this season is ugly to say the least, and his ridiculous 96.8 LOB% is the only reason his ERA has remained low thus far. As of now, Butler should not be considered a valid fantasy option.
Chris Heston, SP, SF
Heston, who faced off against Butler and the Rockies on Monday, allowed 1 ER on 7 hits in 7 IP, and now holds an 0.69 ERA through two starts this season. He struck out five and walked two for the second straight start, which is decent albeit not spectacular. Heston's FIP in his two full seasons in AAA was over 4.50, so it will take more than two decent starts for him to get onto my fantasy radar.
Aaron Harang, SP, PHI
Harang had another great game for the Phillies, going 6 innings while allowing 1 ER, 4 hits and 1 BB. This comes on the heels of his previous outing in which he went 6.1 IP, giving up no runs on only two hits. But while his previous start was backed by 8 strikeouts, this time Harang only managed to strikeout one. Despite the hot start, the fact remains that Harang has posted an ERA above 3.50 in each of his 13 big league seasons and there's no reason to think that 2015 should be any different. I'm not buying into Harang and neither should you.
Giancarlo Stanton, OF, MIA
Stanton went 0-4 with a strikeout on Monday and is now 3-23 with no homeruns in 7 games this season. He has been striking out at his regular pace (27.6%) and the only real peculiar thing about Stanton so far is that he hasn't yet hit a line drive this season. And, of course, that he has zero homeruns. Regardless, Stanton is a beast, and if his owner is concerned that his slow start has to do with his funky new helmet and is willing to trade him for less than first-round value, the buyer will probably be getting a good deal.
And now for a DFS value pick:
Odrisamer Despaigne, SP, SD
Despaigne has had extreme home/road splits thus far in his young career with a lifetime 1.69 ERA and 0.89 WHIP at Petco Park compared to a 5.31 ERA and 1.56 WHIP elsewhere. Fortunately for Despaigne, he will be making his first start of the season at home against the Diamondbacks on Tuesday, so he has a good chance of being successful. Despaigne is one of the cheaper pitchers for the day, and could very well be a bargain. Value Play FanDuel Salary: $6,200
