J.D. Martinez-Tigers-OF
J.D. Martinez was 1-3 with a HR (4), 1 R, 2 RBI, and 1 BB. Martinez has shown no signs of slowing down after his breakout 2014 season. If you purely look at his numbers, he would be a major candidate for regression, but that does not factor in the mechanical adjustments he made last year. He is focusing on the middle of the field, which has allowed him to use his raw power and to make better overall contact. Martinez's power is legit, but he should see regression in terms of batting average, but will continue to be an above average fantasy contributor, especially hitting in the middle of a potent Tigers lineup.
Leonys Martin-Rangers-OF
Leonys Martin was 1-4 with a run scored in the loss to the Angels. Martin is slashing .139/0/2 with no stolen bases through the first eight games. Martin was picked to hit leadoff by new manager Jeff Bannister. Martin should see an increase in runs scored hitting atop the Rangers lineup, but resurgence from Shin-Soo Choo could push Martin back down in the order. Martin offers great speed, but not a lot else, so the leadoff spot is very important role for his fantasy value.
George Springer-Astros-OF
George Springer was 0-3 with a walk and two strikeouts in the loss to the Athletics. Springer is hitting .154 with zero home runs, one RBI, and two stolen bases. He has also struck out 12 times in 25 AB's. Until Springer improves upon his contact rate, it is going to be hard for him to bring back value for owners who took him in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. On the bright side it is encouraging to see him running in the early going after only stealing 5 bases in 78 games a year ago. You should be alarmed, but this is what you signed up for in drafting Springer, huge power/speed combo and a ton of strikeouts.
Miguel Cabrera-Tigers-1B
Miguel Cabrera continued to stay hot on Monday by going 2-4 with two runs scored and a RBI. Cabrera is hitting a robust .517/2/9 with a .576 OBP through the first week. He shows no sign of the foot injury that slowed him during camp and had fantasy owners scared. He once again looks like the best hitter in baseball. When healthy, Cabrera is a Triple Crown threat and a once in a generation type hitter.
DFS Play of the Day
Luis Valbuena-Astros-3B
Luis Valbuena gets the juicy matchup against rookie Kendall Graveman. Valbuena had a .208 ISO and .355 wOBA against RHP a year ago. Valbuena will also likely be hitting in the four-hole, which boosts his fantasy scoring potential. Valbuena is priced very nicely on Fanduel at $2,600, making him an excellent value play. Fanduel Value: $2,600.
