Jake Arrieta, Chicago Cubs - One of these days Arrieta is bound to finish off a no-hitter. It seems like he has flirted with history once a month this season and his no-hitter attempt for September came Tuesday and last into the eighth until Brandon Philips doubled. Arrieta has been an absolute stud this season and has ranked among the games' best pitchers with a 2.30 FIP while racking up just under 9.5 K/9. He kept to his strikeout ways fanning 13 Reds batters in his complete game shutout. He now has six quality starts over his last seven outings and will likely get two more starts down the stretch run for the Cubs. It'll be interesting to see where Arrieta goes in redraft leagues next year, as he hasn't come anywhere near these kind of numbers (even in a small sample size) in the majors, but this is his first year in the NL so some of his success can be attributed to that.
Nathan Eovaldi, Miami Marlins - Eovaldi was hit hard by the Mets as he was chased from the game in the 5th after allowing sixth runs. The marks the second straight game that Eovaldi has struggled and it makes me wonder if his innings count on the season is beginning to wear on him. He has by far thrown the most innings in a single season this year, 186.2, as his season high prior to this year was around 150 in 2012. He has almost a full run differential in his FIP and ERA and with two starts left this year (both coming against Washington) I don't see him finishing the year on a strong note especially with Washington wanting to secure home field throughout the playoffs. While Eovaldi has been a nice piece in owners' rotations thus far, it seems that he might be falling off when owners need him the most.
Chris Coghlan, Chicago Cubs - Coghlan continued his excellent work leadoff for the Cubs as he drove in three runs and went 2-for-3 on the evening in the teams' win over the Reds. His 113 wRC+ is just 10 points below what it was in his Rookie of the Year award season, as he has had a great season for the Cubs helping fill in over the second half of the season. However, Coghlan's 2015 is in doubt because of the simple fact of where will he play with the Cubs? Realistically, Kris Bryant and Addison Russell could begin the year in the majors and if they do, Bryant will occupy a corner outfield spot with Jorge Soler and they have a potential Gold Glove winner in Albert Almora is not far behind as well to take over the centerfield job. Coghlan's best plan would be to use this good season to cash in on a decent deal with another team as he's not in the long term plans for the Cubs.
Wilmer Flores, New York Mets - Flores had the game of his career Tuesday launching two homers and driving in six runs in a 3-for-4 effort, with a double being his other base knock. Flores has struggled overall this season, but his recent hot stretch game shows why the Mets have him in their future plans going Flores is 8-for-15 with 10 runs batted in and four extra-base hits his last four games. Tuesday's start came at second base where he hadn't started since 8/28 against the Braves as he has started games at shortstop, third base, and second base this year. He'll receive regular playing time next year and could be worth a flier at the end of the draft, as he does have double digit homerun power from a premium position.
Dan Haren, Los Angeles Dodgers - Haren had his stretch of four straight quality starts snapped as the Rockies tagged him for five runs in five innings, handing Haren his 11th loss of the season. In terms of fWAR, this has been the worst season in Haren's career (ignoring 2003-04 where he threw just 70 innings in each season), and his 4.18 FIP is among the worst of his career for a full season. With facing the Cubs Sunday, I think he'll have a good start but it's a toss-up on whether he can get the win or not as he'll be facing Jake Arrieta who is rolling through everyone he faces. I would say go to Haren only if you are desperate this weekend, but I like a guy like Cory Rasumus over him if I had to pick one starter to throw that day.
