Hector Santiago-Angels-SP
Hector Santiago went 5 innings and gave up 4 ER on 8 hits, 3 walks, and 3 strikeouts in the win against the Twins. Santiago has a 3.46 ERA over 112 innings with 97 strikeouts. Santiago showed promise for the White Sox prior to being traded over the off-season. His start to 2014 was rough, but he has righted the ship. Santiago owns a 4.48 xFIP, which suggests that he has been outperforming his metrics and is a candidate for regression. Santiago is a flyball pitcher (52.6%), but owns a low 6.9% HR/FB ratio. Santiago is going to be burnt on occasion by the longball because of his FB tendencies. He also does not get a high percentage of swinging strikes (7% which is below league average), which indicates that he has a hard time missing bats. This can lead to hard contact. I would not be fooled by his recent successes.
Mookie Betts-Red Sox-OF
Mookie Betts was 1-4 with a run scored in the loss to the Yankees. Betts is slashing .272/4/10 over his first 31 games. Betts has started off September on fire. He is hitting .357 with a homerun and 2 RBI over 14 AB's. Betts is auditioning for a full time position in 2015. Betts has above average contact skills (88.5%) and will be able to hit 10-12 HR a year because of his ability to barrel up the baseball. Add that to his ability to steal bases and Betts is a sneaky 5-category contributor.
Danny Santana-Twins-SS
Danny Santana was 2-5 with a run scored in the loss to the Angels. Santana is slashing .317/7/37 with 13 SB. Santana has emerged as the Twins starting SS. He has provided across all 5 categories in 2014. There are some concerning signs that point to regression for Santana going forward. Mainly, he has a .384 BABIP and a 4% walk rate. Santana is more of a .260 hitter with speed, than a .300+ hitter with a little power and speed.
J.D. Martinez-Tigers-OF
J.D. Martinez was 1-4 with 2 runs scored in the win against the Indians. Martinez is slashing .307/19/63. I wrote over a month ago about being weary of Martinez, because his peripheral didn't match up with his traditional stats. He has proved me wrong and continued to rake. I am still not sold on Martinez the rest of the way and into next season. His .373 BABIP is the first concern and the second concern is his career high 19% HR/FB ratio. However, there are some positive signs such as his career high 23% LD and his .901 OPS.
Max Scherzer-Tigers-SP
Max Scherzer went 6 innings and gave up 2 ER on 4 hits, 3 walks, and 6 strikeouts in the win against the Indians. Scherzer has a 3.25 ERA over 193 innings with 226 strikeouts. Scherzer is not having the same type of year he did in 2013, but still has shown an elite ability to miss bats. One of the big differences between 2013 and 2014 for Scherzer is his BABIP (.259 in 13' and .315 in 14'). Scherzer's career BABIP falls more in line with his 2014 season, rather than the outlier, which was 2013. Scherzer will remain one of the top fantasy pitchers because of his elite strikeout ability.
