Mookie Betts-Red Sox-SS,OF
Mookie Betts was 1-4 with a RBI and a steal (6) in the loss to the Pirates. Betts is slashing .283/4/14 with 6 SB over his first 43 big league games. Betts should see regular playing time down the stretch and into 2015. He offers an intriguing blend of contact, power, and speed. He is not great any single one category, but will contribute across the board. He has the ability to hit 10-15 HR and steal 25+ bases, all the while hitting for a reasonable average.
Shane Greene-Yankees-SP
Shane Greene went 6.2 innings and gave up 0 ER on 3 hits, 2 walks, and 6 strikeout in the win against the Blue Jays. Greene has a 3.24 ERA over 75 innings with 76 strikeouts. Greene has a 3.38 xFIP, but it is a small sample size. He has been impressive none-the-less. Greene has a sinking fastball, cutter, and slider combo. He mixes his pitches well and has the ability to get GB's (50%). Unlike other sinker-ball pitchers, Greene has good velocity (average 93 mph) on his sinker, with good downward movement. It has not been documented, but I am sure that McCarthy has had an impact on Greene, as they have a similar skill set. Greene will continue to be an asset down the fantasy stretch.
Sonny Gray-Athletics-SP
Sonny Gray went 5 innings and gave up 4 ER on 8 hits, 2 walks, and 4 strikeouts in the loss to the Rangers. Gray has a 3.28 ERA over 203 innings with 166 strikeouts. Gray has been able to handle to rigor of an entire season at the big league level. Some had concerns because of his smaller frame, but Gray has been able to handle the work and has succeeded. Gray owns a 3.55 xFIP and has been a bit more hittable this year than in 2013. Gray's SwStr% went from 9.5 to 8.4, which is below league average. He has also allowed an 80% contact rate, up from 76% a year ago. This might explain the drop in strikeouts for Gray this year. Don't get me wrong, he still has the ability to strike batters out, but not at the 25% he was a year ago. He is a SP#2 with some upside.
Adrian Beltre-Rangers-3B
Adrian Beltre was 1-4 with 2 runs scored and a walk in the win over the Athletics. Beltre is slashing .322/18/72 over 138 games. Beltre at 35 years old has put together a very fine season when most players of his body type and position, begin to decline. He has been aided by a .340 BABIP and his ISO and SLUG have dropped significantly, so not all things are rosy for the 35 year old. Beltre may have a couple more productive seasons left in him, but his dominance at the position is more than likely coming to an end.
Brian McCann-Yankees-C
Brain McCann was 0-4 with 2 strikeouts in the win against the Blue Jays. McCann is slashing .232/20/66. The power has been there for McCann, but he has not produced like the Yankees or fantasy owners would have liked. McCann has produced a career low walk rate(6.1%) and has gone out of the zone more than ever(31.8% O-swing). McCann has hit 16 of his 20 HR at home, which was to be expected with the short porch at Yankee Stadium. McCann will remain a mid-level catcher simply because of his ability to hit 20+ homeruns.
