Johnny Cueto-Reds-SP
Johnny Cueto threw 7 innings of shutout ball with 9 K's in the win against the Nationals. Cueto has not slowed down and has a 2.08 ERA over 155 innings with 157 K's. Cueto has remained healthy and one of the better pitchers in the entire league. For whatever reason, he does not get the same amount of respect or attention that other NL aces have gotten. Cueto has been dominant, but his xFIP of 3.12 and 3.10 SIERA suggest that he is due for regression. Opponents have a .228 BABIP, which is well below his career norm, and are due to regression back to the norm. Cueto's ability to pitch deep in games and his strikeout ability still make him a SP#1.
Jake Peavy-Giants-SP
Jake Peavy was traded to the San Francisco Giants for a couple a of minor league pitchers. Peavy is in the middle of a disappointing season for the Boston Red Sox. He owns 4.79 ERA over 124 innings. The belief is that a move to the National League will kick start Peavey's 2014 season. Peavy owns a 4.34 xFIP and a 4.28 SIERA, which means he's pitched better than his traditional stats indicate, but he still has been nothing more than a league average pitcher. Peavy is a flyball pitcher, so a move to the spacious AT&T Park will be a nice improvement over Fenway. Don't expect a dominant Peavy, but he will see a significant boost in value moving to the NL and a pitcher friendly park.
Ryan Braun-Brewers-OF
Ryan Braun was 2-4 with an RBI in the win against the Mets. Braun is slashing .302/14/60 with 9 SB. He is having a very fine season, but no where close to his monster 2011 and 2012 seasons. He is not hitting for as much power or running. Braun still contributes across the board, but is not close to his 30/30 seasons. Braun has also changed the way he hits. He no longer is a pull hitter. He has shown the ability to go the other way with authority. This will help Braun continue to be a great hitter as he ages.
Andrew McCutchen-Pirates-OF
Andrew McCutchen was 0-4 in the loss to the Rockies. McCutchen is once again putting MVP caliber numbers. He is slashing .314/17/63 with 16 SB. Cutch has always heated up in the month of July. He is hitting .338 with 5 HR, 15 RBI, and 13 XBH. Cutch might be having a better fantasy season than 2013, because he has been running more and the Pirates offense has been much better overall in 2014. Cutch is on pace for a 95 R, 27 HR, 101 RBI, .318 AVG, and 26 SB season. Cutch remains one of the best all around players in the prime of his career.
Matt Kempt-Dodgers-OF
Matt Kemp was 1-3 with a walk in the win against the Giants. Kemp's name has come up in trade rumors recently. It seems like the Dodgers are looking to move on from Kemp and Kemp is not to happy with the move from CF to LF. Kemp is slashing .268/8/38 with 5 SB. Kemp has struggled in July. He is hitting only .237 with zero homeruns. Kemp has been up and down this year, at times flashing his potential, but never putting together for more than a couple of games. Kemp's career high 1.62 GB/FB rate is concerning and the likely cause for his lack of consistency and overall success
