Jason Kipnis-Indians-2B
Jason Kipnis was 2-7 with a run scored in the loss to the Yankees. Kipnis has been a disappointment to many fantasy owners who expected him to build on his breakout 2013 season. Kipnis is slashing .251/3/23 over 247 AB'S. Kipnis has seen a decrease in his walk rate and an increase in his GB%, which have hurt his BA. Kipnis saw a spike in his HR/FB% in 2013 and has not had the same success in 2014. By no means would I give up on Kipnis, but do not expect the 2013 version of Kipnis going forward. He will be more in line with 2012 Kipnis.
Brandon McCarthy-Yankees-SP
Brandon McCarthy worked 6.2 innings, giving up 1 ER on 9 hits and a walk in his Yankees debut. Many will point to McCarthy's 5+ ERA and wonder what the Yankees were thinking, but if you look at his xFIP of 2.89 and his SIERA of 3.01 as indicators. He has pitched much better than his traditional numbers indicate. However, McCarthy is a GB pitcher who relies on his defense for most of his success and a middle infield of Derek Jeter and Brian Roberts/Kelly Johnson are not going to help turn around McCarthy's luck.
Nick Castellanos-Tigers-3B
Nick Castellanos was 1-4 with an RBI in the win over the Dodgers. Castellanos is slashing .268/8/32 in his rookie year. Castellanos has been up and down this year, but ultimately has made the necessary adjustments to be successful at the major league level. There are a couple of factors hurting Castellanos's fantasy value; his spot in the batting order and his lack of power at a run producing position. His below average contact skills are going to limit his ability to hit for average and if he does not provide power, his overall value going forward is not going to warrant a spot on your roster.
Kole Calhoun-Angels-OF
Kole Calhoun was 1-4 with his 10th HR of the year in the win over the Blue Jays. Kole Calhoun is slashing .293/10/24 in a 198 AB. Calhoun has transformed into one of the better all around fantasy OF's. Calhoun provides the ever coveted power/speed combination. Calhoun's batted ball profile suggests that his success is sustainable and he should continue to provide tremendous value hitting in front of Mike Trout and Albert Pujols.
Melky Cabrera-Blue Jays-OF
Melky Cabrera was 1-3 with an RBI, 2 runs scored, and 2 walks. Cabrera is slashing .301/11/44 with 4 SB. During July, Cabrera has seen his GB% jump up to 65%, which has meant a decline in his LD rate and his overall power. Cabrera's power display in March/April was out of the ordinary, as Cabrera is not someone who is going to hit 20+ HR. Cabrera however, is a legitimate .300 hitter and his position a top the Blue Jays lineup, keeps his overall value up.
