Erick Aybar-Angels-SS
Erick Aybar was 1-4 with a run scored in the win against the Astros. Aybar is in the midst of a very fine season for the Angels. He is slashing .277/6/42 with 8 SB. Aybar has been a poor man's Jose Reyes for years now. They have a very similar skill set. Aybar's success is sustainable because he rarely strikeouts and has above average contact rates. The only thing hurting his overall value is hitting at the bottom of the Angels order. If he could somehow move to the top of the Angels lineup, he would see a huge boost in value.
Matt Shoemaker-Angels-SP
Matt Shoemaker gave up 2 ER over 6 innings on 7 hits and 7 SO in the win against the Astros. Shoemaker has been a pleasant surprise for the Angels. He is sporting a 4.35 ERA over 60 IP with 4.42 K/BB ratio. Shoemaker's xFIP (3.24) and SIERA (3.20) suggest that Shoemaker has been unlucky and will see more success than his traditional stats suggest. Shoemaker does not have an overpowering fastball, but he does have an above average splitter that keeps hitters honest and creates a lot of ground balls. If he is available by chance in your league, pick him up and enjoy.
Sonny Gray-Athletics-SP
Sonny Gray (8-3) went 7 innings and gave up 1 ER in the win against the Blue Jays. Gray along with Kazmir, have proven to be a dominant duo for the Athletics in 2014. Gray's season line reads 3.08 ERA over 111 innings with 95 strikeouts. Gray's xFIP (3.53) suggests that a slight regression is in store, but Gray will continue to be an above average starter because of his plus stuff and strikeout ability. Gray can be hurt at times by walks (3.2 K/9), but he minimizes the damage with strikeouts and a healthy GB rate (54%).
Kurt Suzuki-Twins-C
Kurt Suzuki was 1-4 with a run scored and a RBI in the loss to the Yankees. Suzuki has been a pleasant surprise offensively for the Twins. He is slashing .303/2/34 over 69 games. Suzuki has not hit for much power, but for a second catcher in most leagues, he has provided nice value. Suzuki's batted ball stats suggest that this success is sustainable. He has an above average contact rate (92%) and has a healthy LD rate (22%) and GB rate (42%).
Derek Jeter-Yankees-SS
Derek Jeter was 0-4 with a RBI in the win against the Twins. Jeter is hitting .268/2/21 with 5 SB. Jeter's batted ball profile is not all that far off from his career numbers. He has good contact rates, doesn't swing at a high % out of the zone, and hits a lot of groundballs. At this point in his career, Jeter just isn't able to do much with the balls that he does make contact with. He has a measly .058 ISO and .358 SLG. Jeter is nothing more than a singles hitter at this point and he rarely runs. Take emotions out of the equation and move on, you will be better off.
