Jake Arrieta, Chicago Cubs - Arrieta was dominant yet again Tuesday as he took a perfect game into the 7th inning before Billy Hamilton led off the inning with a single. He completed with seventh and was able to pick up his fourth win of the season while lowering his FIP to 2.09. He struck out nine Cubs' in the contest, giving him three straight starts with at least nine punchouts. Arrieta has been a very popular add in leagues, but is still available in over 40% of ESPN leagues so there is a chance he could still be out there in your league. Arrieta currently owns a .321 BABIP which is much higher than his career BABIP of 2.88 and he has a GB% of over 50% so both of those make it likely that he can continue to be a valuable asset to owners over the rest of the season.
Jordan Zimmerman, Washington Nationals - Zimmerman was excellent once again Tuesday but ended up with a no decision after throwing six inning while allowing just two runs. His FIP continues to drop and now sits at 2.77. He has been one of, if not the best, pitchers in June as he entered Tuesday with a 0.84 ERA for the month with 27 K's against just three walks. Batters are also hitting just .153 against him for the month. Zimmerman is one of the best pitchers in baseball and is having an excellent season after winning 19 games a year ago. A great sign for owners is that Zimmerman is doing all this with a BABIP that's almost 20 points higher than his career average.
Jesse Hahn, San Diego Padres - Hahn earned his third win with six excellent innings against Giants with a career high 8 strikeouts. This marks his third straight quality start after being roughed up in his MLB debut where he has allowed just two runs over 19.0 innings. Tuesday's outing lowered his already impressive FIP down to 3.02 with a 2.38 ERA. The combination of his 10.72 K/9 and his 58.3% GB rate are excellent signs as he is missing bats, but when batters are making contact he is able to force weaker contact. His next start comes against the Reds at home, so he's worth a look based on that matchup and could be a valuable roster add over the course of the season.
Andrew Heaney, Miami Marlins - The Phillies roughed up Heaney Tuesday scoring five runs in 5 innings, though two of the runs were unearned. Heaney was not as effective as his 6 inning one run performance in his debut, as he threw 95 pitches in his five innings while striking out five and walking two. Through two starts he does own a 3.27 ERA but also owns a 5.09 FIP. Heaney struck out 79 in 76.2 innings across two levels before his promotion and now has 8 through 11 innings at the major league level. His next matchup comes against arguably the top team in baseball in the A's, so more of what he had today could be in store Sunday. He's still a great own in any league being one of the top pitching prospects in baseball and is locked into the rotation for the rest of the season.
BJ Upton, Atlanta Braves - Upton is the fifth different player to bat leadoff for the Braves this year, and responded to the lineup move by belting his 7th homer of 2014. He's well on his way to another disappointing season with the Braves, triple slashing .203/.272/.337 with a 71 +wRC. It'll be interesting to see if Upton's solid performance keeps him in the leadoff spot and if he is able to play well enough to stay there long term. If he can, he'll get a nice boost in value hitting in front of the likes of Freddie Freeman, Evan Gattis, and Justin Upton. It's a situation to monitor over the next week or so.
