Trevor Bauer-Indians-SP
Trevor Bauer managed to give up 4 ER over 6.1 innings against the Tigers. Bauer gave up 8 hits with 5 strikeouts and 2 walks. Bauer has seen much better results this year than his previous stints at the major league level. Bauer has a slight build, but has a big arm with a 94 mph average FB, that routinely gets into the upper 90's. His mechanics are unorthodox. They are deceptive and help lead to high strikeout totals (9.3 K/9), but they are also hard to repeat, which leads to a higher walk rate (3.54/9) than you would like to see. Bauer's season line is 4.40 ERA/47 IP/47 K. Bauer is going to continue to be a source of strikeouts. His xFIP (3.72) and SIERA (3.66) suggest that he is actually pitching better than his counting stats indicate.
Ruby De La Rosa-Red Sox-SP
Ruby De La Rosa went 7 innings giving up 1 ER with 7 strikeouts against the Athletics. De La Rosa has a 2.51 ERA over 32 innings with 30 strikeouts. De La Rosa's xFIP is 2.92 and his SIERA 3.08 suggest that his success is sustainable. De La Rosa is mostly a FB/CH pitcher that gets a lot of GB (55%) and doesn't walk many batters. The bad news is that with Clay Buchholz and Felix Doubront coming off the DL and Brandon Workman completing his 6-game suspension, De La Rosa is likely the odd man out in the Red Sox rotation.
Jesse Chavez-Athletics-SP
Jesse Chavez threw 7 shutout innings against the Red Sox. Chavez has a 2.71 ERA over 93 innings with 82 K's. Chavez a reliever turned starter, has been a nice surprise for the Athletics. Chavez's advanced stats, xFIP (3.43) and SIERA (3.45), suggest that he is due for some regression, but is still an above average SP. The real concern with Chavez is whether he will be on an innings limit this year. Chavez has never thrown more than a 105 IP, which means he is about to enter into uncharted territory. Teams are very leery of pitchers exceeding their previous years innings pitched by a large percentage, because it has been proven to lead to an increase in arm injuries. Keep an eye out for any reports suggesting an innings limit for Chavez.
Josh Donaldson-Athletics-3B
Josh Donaldson went 0-3 with a walk and strikeout against the Red Sox. Donaldson has been in a slump in the month of June. He is hitting .181 with 3 HR and 9 RBI. He is also sporting a 15/2 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Donaldson's season line has dropped to .253 with 18 HR and 55 RBI. The power is legit, but his ability to hit for a relatively high average is not. Donaldson's BABIP is really low this month (.182), but he has been pounding the ball into the ground over 65% of the time in June. He will find his stroke and his power legit, but just don't expect him to hit in the .280-.290 range.
Chris Young-Mariners-SP
Chris Young gave up 1 ER over 7 innings of work against the Royals. Young gave up 3 hits, 2 walks, and 2 strikeouts. Young is 6-4 with a 3.23 ERA over 79.1 innings. Young has been a nice surprise for the Mariners. He is outperforming his peripheral stats. He has a 5.72 xFIP and a 5.81 SIERA. Young's 4.65 K/9 and 3.72 BB/9 do not inspire anyone. It is only a matter of time until Young comes back down to earth.
