Wil Myers-Rays-OF
Wil Myers is enduring the dreaded sophomore slump. It might be a case of major league pitchers adjusting to Myers or Myers is not making the necessary adjustments. Either way, he his hitting .252 with 4 HR and 19 RBI. Myers has seen a significant drop in his batted ball distance from 293 a year ago to only 270 this year. It is hard to hit 25+ HR with a 270 avg. batted ball distance. Myers also has below average contact rate of 75%. The good news is that Myers is still young and has plenty of time to make the necessary adjustments. Fantasy owners might not be as patient with a guy whose value is centered around his power numbers. I would be very concerned with Myers production going forward.
Tyler Flowers-White Sox-C
Tyler Flowers went 0-4 against the Athletics on Wednesday. Flowers is hitting .318 with 2 HR and 13 RBI. Unfortunately, if you own Flowers, you better enjoy the success while you can, because he is going to come crashing back to earth soon. His .493 BABIP is insanely high and unsustainable. Flowers is also striking out over 30% of the time and has a poor contact rate of 70%. None of these numbers suggest that Flowers can hit for average going forward. Flowers is due for some serious regression going forward.
Masahiro Tanaka-Yankees-SP
I am going to be honest, I was skeptical about the level of success that Tanaka would have. Tanaka has been better than advertised so far. He improved to 6-0 with a complete game shutout against the Mets. He didn't walk a batter and struckout eight. Tanaka has been lights out to the tune of a 2.17 ERA, .91 WHIP, and 66 K's in 58 innings. Tanaka is one of, if not the premier starting pitcher in the game today.
Alcides Escobar-Royals-SS
Alcides Escobar went 1-3 in the win versus the Rockies. Escobar has a .284/2/17 slash line with 11 SB. Escobar has above average contact rates at 80% and has decreased the number of balls out of the zone that he swings at. The last time Escobar had an OBP in the .330 range, he was able to steal 35 bases. If Escobar can continue to get on base, he will be a nice under the radar waiver wire pick up.
Jake Odorizzi-Rays-SP
Jake Odorizzi threw six shutout innings of one-hit ball in the win versus the Mariners. Odorizzi has struggled so far in 2014. He managed to lower his ERA to 4.89. Odorizzi's xFIP of 3.89 suggests that better times are in store for the young righthander. Odorizzi has struggled with his control and the homerun ball at times. He is a flyball pitcher with a .90 GB/FB ratio. Odorizzi does have an above average K/9 of over 10, but his walk rate of 4.4 BB/9 is too high. Going forward we can expect his numbers to come down, but he is still going to be an average pitcher.
