Gregory Polanco, Pittsburgh Pirates - Pirates top prospect Gregory Polanco is tearing up AAA and it appears we have now entered the "Polanco Watch" stage of 2014. With another homer Tuesday, he now has three homers and has driven in 20 runs in 18 games. With Travis Snider hitting just .250 with three homers (and being recently suspended from his participation in Monday's Sunday's brawl), the Pirates have to consider Polanco to take over the right field spot for the present and future. Polanco will be an impact performer for the Pirates right away, and will have a chance to be a fantasy asset bringing his five tools to PNC Park. His skillset matches that of Jason Heyward, but Polanco has used his speed more in the minors (40 steals in 2012). With his AAA performance, he is worth going ahead and stashing if you have an available roster spot as he should be in the majors within the next few weeks.
Scooter Gennett, Milwaukee Brewers - Scooter Gennett has taken what was once a platoon with Rickie Weeks and turned it into his job at second base starting 9 out of the past 10 games at the position. Weeks has fallen off tremendously and now will get a spot start here and there, but with Gennett hitting well into the .300's he will continue to get the at bats at second. Gennett is a solid hitter but doesn't provide much in any of the counting categories for fantasy. His six homers in 69 games last year though is interesting though considering he never hit more than nine in the minors (in nearly double the amount of games). His top stolen base total came in 2010 with 14, so he's not exactly a speedster on the bases either. He can provide a nice average and is more valuable in NL only leagues than mixed leagues.
Carlos Gomez, Milwaukee Brewers - Carlos Gomez has been suspended three games by the MLB for his actions in the on-field altercation with the Pirates. Gomez is appealing the suspension so he will be able to play while the appeal is heard and determined on whether he will have to serve that suspension or not. The appeal works nice as the Brewers are short on centerfielders with Logan Schafer currently on the disabled list. If the appeal does not last long enough for Schafer to return, Elian Herrera would earn the centerfield playing time for those three games but is not worth adding in any leagues.
Jose Fernandez, Miami Marlins - Jose Fernandez turned in an absolute gem against the Braves with 8.0 innings of shutout baseball and 14 strikeouts. He allowed just three base runners, all hits, while picking up his third win of the season and lowering his ERA to 1.99. There really aren't anymore superlatives to throw Fernandez's way, as he is pitching as well as anyone in the majors. He has improved both his K/9 and BB/9 from last year and the Marlins are giving him enough run support to win. The sky really is the limit for Fernandez, and there's a great chance he finishes as the number one starter in fantasy this year.
Alex Wood, Atlanta Braves - Alex Wood was almost as dominant as his counterpart Tuesday allowing just one run in eight innings while fanning 11 Marlins batters. The Braves were unable to muster any run support for Wood for the second time in a row as he has taken two hard luck L's after going two straight starts with eight innings and one run allowed. He was pegged as a breakout candidate going into this season and is rewarding owners with a 2.76 FIP through four starts. He has an excellent 9.0 K/9 and has allowed just three homers in 35.0 innings. The only knock on Wood is his 2-3 record, but he is just proving why the win is a meaningless stat outside of fantasy baseball.
