Wilmer Flores- NYN- Rookie- It wasn't an auspicious debut for Flores, who went 0-for-4 and committed an error last night. He was hitting .321 with 15 homers in 463 ABs at AAA Las Vegas when he was called up. Flores had a K% of only 13.6%, but his BB% was at 5.4%, a significant drop from the 7.3% he posted in 2012 after being promoted to AA. Flores has the ability to hit for average but there may be some growing pains as he adjusts to the majors and his long term power potential may be problematic for a corner infielder.
LaTroy Hawkins- NYN- Hot- Hawkins got the first chance to earn a save in the new Mets' bullpen by committee and he was successful. This was his first save of 2013 and 89th of his career. Hawkins has increased his K/9 to 6.75 and has maintained good control with a 1.64 BB/9. He could emerge as the most frequent closing option in the absence of the injured Bobby Parnell.
Julio Teheran- ATL- Hot- Teheran picked up a quality start last night, allowing 1 run on 4 hits and 2 walks in 6 IP. After striking out 11 in 5 IP his last time out he only fanned 4 in this outing. The Braves are making sure they don't overextend the 22-year-old. He came out of his previous start after 103 pitches and only threw 90 last night. Teheran has only thrown more than 110 pitches once this season. This should be beneficial to his long term health.
Ryan Ludwick- CIN- Inj update- Ludwick's rehab eligibility runs out on Sunday so the Reds have to decide what to do with him. There is some concern because he has only gone 2-for-28 in his 9 rehab games. However, there is some incredibly bad luck going on. In Ludwick's 22 ABs for AAA Louisville his BABIP is .063. There is extreme luck working on a small sample size here. If Ludwick is physically capable, activation from the DL should be a no-brainer.
Jonathan Lucroy- MIL- Hot- Lucroy has hit .306 with 3 homers and 8 RBI since the All Star Break. There may be some regression to the mean going on. Even after this stretch, Lucroy's BABIP is at .276, with a career mark of .306. There is still room for positive regression, which would further move Lucroy into the upper echelon of catchers.
