Wily Peralta-MIL- Hot- Peralta had finally started coming around but had to leave last night's game with a hamstring injury. He had allowed 10 ER in 23.1 IP across his previous 4 starts but only struck out 9 batters. Last night Peralta threw 5.1 scoreless IP plus struck out 5 batters. If he had finally started increasing his K rate then he was getting closer to achieving his potential. The severity of his injury will determine whether he will get a chance to continue to improve.
Michael Young- PHI- Hot- Young went 2-for-4 last night, starting July where he left off in June. He has had wild swings of luck this year, with a .411 BABIP through the end of April, a .192 BABIP in May and then a .367 BABIP last month. Overall, his BABIP is at .331 so another spell of poor luck is expected.
Roy Oswalt- COL- Old Player- Oswalt has started three games for the Rockies and has yet to give up fewer than 4 runs. Last night was 5 earned runs allowed in 5 IP. That makes his ERA for the season 7.88. Oswalt's FIP is a far lower 2.43, but given his production last year and his peripherals in the minors this year he probably isn't going to have much fantasy value.
Pedro Strop- CHN- Trade- Strop was dealt to the Cubs but is unlikely to solve their bullpen woes. He posted a 2.44 ERA in 66.1 IP with the Orioles last year, his first with a significant major league role. However, Strop's FIP was 3.59, mainly due to a 5.02 BB/9. This year his control issues got worse, with a BB/9 of 6.04 even as his K/9 rose from 7.87 to 9.67. Strop also had a HR/9 of 1.61. Of the 4 homers he allowed in 22.1 IP, 3 of them came at Camden Yards. Moving to Wrigley Field probably won't help.
Homer Bailey- CIN- Hot- Bailey got some regression to the mean in a big way last night as he threw the second no-hitter of his career. The gap between his ERA and FIP is down to less than a run, at 3.57 to 2.66. Bailey struck out 9 in his 9 IP, which kept his ratio of exactly 1 K per IP intact. There is still room for more positive regression, even if he isn't going to throw a no-no every time out.
