Mitch Moreland- TEX- Hot- Moreland added two homers last night, giving him 6 in his last 9 games. His average is up to .296 for the year. Moreland has had some luck recently, but not of the outrageous kind. His BABIP of .333 this month is higher than his .294 the first month of the season so his .347 average so far in May has some room to drop. His power has surged and Moreland isn't a creature of Rangers Ballpark. Of his 9 homers this year, 5 have come on the road. It seems like a combination of improved Batting EYE, age-27 peak performance and what will likely be a career high in playing time are combining to give Moreland fantasy value.
Josh Hamilton- LAA- Caution- Hamilton went 1-for-3 with a walk last night but he may be battling physical issues for a while to come. He is going to see an allergist because he has become "sensitive to Southern California's climate" in the words of the Angels' official website. Right now Hamilton is trying different antibiotics to treat the sinus problems that are making him sensitive to light. Until the underlying issues are addressed Hamilton may have difficulty producing up to the contract he signed in the offseason.
Melky Cabrera- TOR- Hot- Cabrera went 4-for-5 yesterday, continuing his hot month. He is hitting .352 in May. However, that is being driven by a .400 BABIP and Cabrera has only walked once, giving him a .11 Batting EYE so far this month. His non-PED power is still virtually non-existent as he sits on a single homer this season, although he has hit 5 doubles this month. If you have him and can sell high, now is the time to do so.
Chris Tillman- BAL- Hot- The good Tillman was on display last night, allowing 1 run on 4 hits and 2 walks while striking out 7 in 7 IP. He now has 5 quality starts in a row. Tillman has walked 12 in 33.2 IP in those starts. In his first three starts of the season, none of them of the quality variety, he walked 8 batters in 14 IP. As Fantistics' Joe Hettler has noted, control is the key for Tillman. He has had it of late and is looking like a more solid option with every start.
Jeremy Guthrie- KC- Cold- Guthrie's luck finally ran out. After 18 starts without getting nailed with a loss, he finally took one last night. He allowed 5 runs on 11 hits and 3 walks without striking out a batter in 7 IP. Guthrie gave up 4 homers. Even after that performance his BABIP stands at .256 and his LOB% at 95.3%. That accounts for the huge difference between Guthrie's 2.82 ERA and 5.54 FIP. With a K/9 of 4.97 and BB/9 of 2.82 regression to the mean will be ugly. Perhaps it has already started. If you have Guthrie and can sell high, now may be your last chance.
