Mike Carp- SEA- Inj Update- Carp is likely to be activated from the DL today. With Justin Smoak not exactly tearing it up since he was recalled from AAA, there will probably be opportunity for Carp to get playing time as the season winds down.
Tommy Milone- OAK- Cold- Milone may be experiencing some regression to the mean with respect to his home record. He got roughed up to the tune of 5 runs allowed in 3 IP on 10 hits while only collecting 1 strikeout. His control was still there as he only walked one. Milone only has 1 quality start in his last 5 outings at home. Even with that stretch his BABIP is only .259 in Oakland. As a fly ball pitcher, he still benefits from the expanses of the Coliseum, allowing only .51 HR/9 there s opposed to 2.05 on the road. Milone isn't an automatic stellar performer at home any more.
Samuel Deduno- MIN- Hot- After walking only 1 batter in his last 2 starts covering 12 IP, Deduno was back to his wild self, walking 3 in 6 IP. It was another quality start, his 7th in 11 starts since joining the Minnesota rotation. Deduno's FIP of 5.12 shows how lucky he has been to post an ERA of 3.66.
James Shields- TB- FYI- Shields threw 121 pitches yesterday after throwing the same number in his last start. That may seem to be a lot but last year he had 4 of his 5 games of 120+ pitches from August 26th on. Shields had an ERA of 2.68 in the month of September so he has shown an ability to handle high workloads, even late in the season.
Chris Carpenter- BOS- Rookie- Carpenter, not to be confused with Chris Carpenter (STL) or even Cris Carpenter (long ago STL) is a 26-year-old reliever who can touch triple digits with his fastball. As with many flamethrowers, control can be an issue and has been as he has worked his way back from injury in his first season with the Boston organization. In 21.2 minor league IP Carpenter struck out 25 batters but also walked 10. He needs to harness his power and if he can he has potential to be a significant part of the Boston bullpen next year.
