JA Happ: It has been a difficult season for Happ, as he missed over 3 months with a forearm injury and was traded from a playoff caliber team to one in the cellar. On the positive side, in his 8 starts, he has shown growth in his dominance, 2009/2010 K/9’s 6.5/7.3. However the negatives far outweigh the K’s. Not only does his control, 6.4 BB/9, make him unrosterable, but with a 53% FB%, if his 3% HR/FB% even remotely normalizes, his 3.54 ERA would shoot up to well over 5.00 in a hurry.
Andrew Miller: In his first start of the year, Miller held the Astros to 1 ER over 5 innings. Before you get excited over this former top prospect, consider that Miller was 1-8 with a 6.01 ERA and a 6.4 BB/9 in 18 Double-A starts. Even if the Marlins give him another start, he should be nowhere near a fantasy roster.
Barry Enright: On the surface, it appears like the D’Backs have themselves a good young starter in Enright, 4-2 with a 2.73 ERA in 10 starts. However, his skills are soft, 5.3 K/9 and a 3.0 BB/9. The low ERA is more the product of good fortune, .185 BHIP%, 83% S%, and an 8% HR/FB%. If even one of those normalizes, his ERA will head north, but if all three do, you will see some disaster outings.
Yovani Gallardo: Gallardo has been able to shave a half-run off of his ERA by maintaining his dominance while cutting down on the walks, 2009/2010 ERA’s 3.73/3.28, K/9’s 9.9/9.8, and BB/9’s 4.6/3.8. Although the walks are still on the high side, his dominance more than makes up for it and at just 24 years of age, if he continues the growth in control, you could be looking at a future Cy Young award winner.
Clayton Kershaw: In his second full season, Kershaw has been able to maintain his dominance while showing significant growth in his control, 2009/2010 K/9’s 9.7/9.5 and BB/9’s 4.8/3.9. Although he has enjoyed some good fortune, 2009/2010 S%’s 77%/76% and HR/FB%’s 4%/6%, Kershaw has put up great numbers and skills for someone who is just 22 years of age, 2009/2010 ERA’s 2.79/3.07. It is scary to think how good he can be as his body matures and if he continues the growth in his control.
