Tommy Hunter: Hunter is using smoke and mirrors to put up his good numbers, 9-2 with a 3.71 ERA, as his skills are below average, 4.9 K/9, 2.4 BB/9, and a 39% GB%. A 78% S% and a .220 BHIP% helps to explain the inflated numbers. 14 ER in his last 15 innings gives you an idea of the risk in rostering Hunter.
Jake Arrieta: With the team going nowhere, the Orioles continue to give Arrieta starts despite poor numbers, 5.23 ERA in 72.1 innings, and even worse skills, 4.2 K/9, 5.0 BB/9, and a 43% GB%. His Triple-A dominance, 7.9 K/9, hints at potential but even down there he was struggling with his control, 4.2 BB/9. Arrieta has a lot of work to do and he should be nowhere near a fantasy roster at this time.
Jeremy Hellickson: Hellickson has done nothing to deserve being removed from the starting rotation, 3-0 with a 1.35 ERA in 3 starts, but his spot in the rotation will depend on the health of Wade Davis and Jeff Niemann. Although his control won’t stay this good, his skills, 8.1 K/9, 1.4 BB/9, 47% GB%, are just a continuation of what he was doing in Triple-A, 9.4 K/7 and a 2.7 BB/9. As long as he is in the starting rotation, he needs to be active in all formats.
Brett Anderson: It has been an injury-marred sophomore season for Anderson, but when healthy, he has put up good numbers, 2.89 ERA in 56 innings. For the second consecutive season, he has also displayed outstanding skills, 2009/2010 K/9’s 7.7/6.3, BB/9’s 2.1/1.3, and GB%’s 51%/57%, and he is still only 22 years of age. If his health cooperates, Anderson has the skills to be one of the top pitchers in baseball.
Curtis Granderson: The question with Granderson is if he is really fast, 10 for 11 in SB this year and 77 for 95 in 770 career games or does he just pick his spots well. With 63 career triples, the answer is that Granderson is really fast. If he ever decides to run more often, just a 14% SBO% this season, he could easily swipe 50+ bases in a season.
