Joba Chamberlain: Despite picking up a win against the Red Sox last night, Chamberlain was less than impressive with 7 walks, but for year his numbers still look good, 8-2 with a 3.73 ERA. The 8.0 K/9 and 44% GB% is a winning combination, but he is going to have to cut back on the walks, 4.4 BB/9 for continued success.
John Smoltz: Smoltz was bombed last night for 8 ER in just 3.1 innings against the Yankees last night, leaving him with really ugly numbers for the season, 2-5 with a 8.33 ERA. If he remains in the Red Sox rotation, expect a bounce back because his skills still look good, 7.4 K/9, 2.0 BB/9, 43% GB%.
Bruce Chen: Chen picked up his first victory as a Royal last night, when he yielded just 2 ER over 6.2 innings. His 6.0 K/9 is not enough to make up for a 3.0 BB/9 and a 55% FB%. There will just be too many 2 and 3-run home runs flying out of the park. This is not someone you want on your fantasy team.
Jason Vargas: Vargas allowed 7 ER over 7 innings last night in taking a loss against the Royals. Since being recalled from Triple-A, he is 0-3 with a 10.13 ERA. With the rest of his skill set below average, 2.7 BB/9 and a 37% GB%, he will need to bump up his dominance, 5.1, if he is going to have success.
Chad Gaudin: The Yankees acquired Chad Gaudin from the Padres yesterday. He may slide into Sergio Mitre’s spot in the rotation. His ground ball/strike out package, 9.0 K/9 and a 45% GB%, makes him intriguing, but the walks, 4.8, tend to get him in trouble, 4-10 with a 5.13 ERA. If he can ever get the walks under control, he could be something special.
