Manny Corpas: Corpas has bone chips in his elbow, which will likely lead to a stint on the DL. His 5.40 ERA is misleading as he is showing good skills, 6.5 K/9, 1.7 BB/9, and a 49% GB%. A low 62% strand rate and a high .378 BHIP% can take the blame for the inflated ERA. If Huston Street was to falter, Corpas has the skills to get the job done as the Rockies closer.
Mike Cameron: The 36-year-old Cameron still has some nice pop in his bat, 12 home runs and 12 doubles in 223 AB, but his days as a speed threat could be over, 2 steals in 3 attempts. He knows how to take a walk, 14% BB%, but his low 71% Ct% means that you will not be getting a good batting average, .247 this year, to go with the power.
David Bush: Bush had another shaky outing yesterday, allowing 5 ER in just 3 innings against Detroit. Despite always having good skills, 2007/2008/2009 K/9’s of 6.5/5.3/6.6 and BB/9’s of 2.1/2.3/2.9, something always seems to go wrong for Bush, ERA’s of 5.12/4.18/5.67. This year it is gopheritis, 18 home runs allowed in 81 innings. With a 45% FB, he will give up his share of home runs, but his 17% HR/FB% should normalize, which should shave some points off of his ERA.
Doug Davis: Despite having an acceptable 3.72 ERA, Davis brings a 3-8 record into Seattle today. He has a solid 6.6 K/9 but his shaky control, 3.9 BB/9, and growing fly ball rate, 2007/2008/2009 FB%’s of 34%/31%/37%, could lead to some problems. With an 80% strand rate and a .257 BHIP%, things could actually get worse for Davis.
Paul Maholm: After a breakout 2008 season, 3.71 ERA in 31 starts, Maholm’s skills have taken a step back this year, 2008/2009 K/9’s of 6.1/5.6, BB/9’s of 2.8/2.9, and GB%’s of 54%/51%, which is leading to a higher ERA, 4.23. He turns 27 years of age next week, so being in his prime years, there is a good chance that he can make the slight adjustments and get back to last year’s level. Today he gets the start in Colorado.
