With nearly two months behind us, this is about the time where prospects who started the season in the big leagues no longer can be classified as prospects. This week, Colby Rasmus, Elvis Andrus, and Trevor Cahill dropped off the list with Jenmar Gomez, Freddie Freeman, Drew Stubbs, and Michael Saunders joining the top 50s.
Among this week's 80 prospect updates:
American League
1 Matt Wieters BAL C A .285 with 5 HR..and he's getting "the call" on Friday. Should be starting catcher immediately.
5 Justin Smoak TEX 1B A- .324/.443/.500. May not have Teixeira power, but high draft pick, switch-hitting 1B. He'll be above avg.
7 Matt LaPorta CLE OF A- So he didn't hit much, but why do teams call guys up and not play them?
9 Mike Moustakas KC 3B A- .350 with just 4 K's in last 10 games. 18.2 AB/HR vs. 22.5 a year ago.
11 Lars Anderson BOS 1B A- .962 OPS in 133 AA AB last year but just .228/.329/.409 this year and and so-so 74% CT%.
40 David Hernandez BAL SP B Overlooked when talking about BAL SP prospects, but 14-strikout effort in last start, 12.5 K/9 in '09.
43 Trevor Reckling LAA SP B Just turned 20 this week and has 1.70 ERA in 9 GS split between A+ and AA.
45 Gio Gonzalez OAK SP B Has really regressed as a prospect, but I'll give him a little more time before dropping him off list.
46 Martin Perez TEX SP B BB/9 improved from 4.1 to 2.5 over last year. 2.43 ERA and 11.1 K/9.
48 Jenmar Gomez CLE SP B 1.36 ERA between A+ and AA and oh, a nine-inning perfect game in his last start. Hard to ignore.
National League
28 Dominic Brown PHI OF B+ .381 in May brings him to .331/.414/.581with 6 HR and 11 SB.
30 Michael Taylor PHI OF B+ .359 with 2 HR in last 10 G and .324/.375/.604 on the year w/ 8 HR and 8 SB.
33 Brett Lawrie MIL 2B B .844 OPS with 6 HR and 11 SB. Very good offensive potential as far as 2Bmen go.
34 Kyle Blanks SD 1B B .918 OPS in the Texas League last year and .805 in the PCL? A bit of a disappointment.
37 Mat Gamel MIL 3B B .211 in 19 at-bats and will need to do better to steal at-bats from Bill Hall.
2 Tommy Hanson ATL SP A 1.51 ERA, 3 H allowed in last 2 starts (13 IP). 73:15 K:BB in 53 2/3 innings.
3 Madison Bumgarner SF SP A 6-2-0-0-1-10 last time out. Starting to think we'll see him in SF later this year.
7 Jarrod Parker ARI SP A- 11 BB in 15 2/3 IP over last 3 GS but still 1.84 ERA and 50:16 K:BB in 44 IP this year.
19 Kyle Drabek PHI SP B+ 4 ER in 6 IP last time out, but 9 K's gives him impressive 67:18 K:BB in 52 2/3 IP (w/ 2.91 ERA).
20 Carlos Carrasco PHI SP B+ 3.55 ERA over last 2 GS is a big improvement. 52:13 K:BB in 48 IP should be the focus, not 5.81 ERA.
