If you're not a subscriber, you may not know that each week, we have between 60 and 80 prospect updates to our top 50 hitters, top 50 pitchers, and team-by-team top 5s. This is just a small sample. I'll move guys up, down, on, and off these lists based on scouting information, statistical performance, injuries, and other mitigating factors. Certainly prospect ranking is far from an exact science and not all of the guys I speak glowingly about are going to make it, but hopefully this feature is helpful for many of you.
American League
20 Desmond Jennings TAM OF B+ Back/shoulder injuries delayed debut to 6/1, but he then homered in first at-bat.
21 Jed Lowrie BOS SS B+ 10-for-21 since returning to AAA. He'll be back with the next infield injury.
24 Carlos Triunfel SEA SS B+ Hot and cold - .195 in April, .342 in May, but 4-for-34 in last 10 games.
33 Ben Revere MIN OF B Maybe he wasn't an overdraft after all - .418/.468/.589. 17 SB but just 63% SB%.
35 Chris Carter OAK 1B B Just .179 for the month of May after 8 HR in April. 66 K in 56 G is troublesome.
2 David Price TAM SP A 8 IP, 8 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 19 K in three starts. Since he turns 23 in Aug, a late-season call-up is possible.
3 Rick Porcello DET SP A 6.32 ERA in his last three starts isn't a shocker considering his age and 5.17 ERA.
9 Wade Davis TAM SP A- Last 8 GS: 2.74 ERA. 52:27 K:BB isn't top prospect material, but patience is called for.
11 Trevor Cahill OAK SP A- 1 ER or less in 7 of 11 starts. 2.83 ERA and 10.9 K/9 in hitter's league is more than impressive.
13 Gio Gonzalez OAK SP A- Centerpiece of Swisher deal has now allowed 17 ER over last 13.2 innings. ERA now at 5.98.
National League
25 Jordan Schafer ATL OF B+ 2-for-4 with triple after 50-game HGH suspension. Was 1-for-11 early on.
26 J.R. Towles HOU C B+ His bat has been so disappointing, a AAA return is a distinct possibility.
30 Gerardo Parra ARI OF B .301/.381/.413 and 12 SB got him promoted to AA at age 20. Power should eventually develop.
34 Steven Pearce PIT OF B .361 with 2 HR in last 10 G as he attempts to make up for awful start.
41 Todd Frazier CIN SS B .269/.344/.500 since promotion to high-A with 9 XBH in 21 games. If he can only stick at SS…
38 Colin Balester WAS SP B 6-4-2-2-1-5 last time out. Looking at a September call-up at this point unless he improves 4.47 ERA.
41 Chris Perez STL RP B Not sure I see the Cards using him as a full-time closer this year, but next year, certainly.
42 Scott Elbert LAD SP B Reportedly throwing in the 92-95 range and could finally return in mid-June.
48 Casey Weathers COL RP B 1.86 ERA in 9.2 innings with 7:4 K:BB. Could be COL future closer.
49 Daryl Thompson CIN SP B 1.76 ERA got him to AAA. He's the best thing to come out of the Kearns/Lopez deal with WAS.
