Jake Peavy: Peavy went on the DL with a strained muscle in his right elbow. Reports have him missing anywhere from two to six weeks. The Padres and fantasy owners are hoping for the former because his skills, 2006/2007/2008 K/9’s of 9.6/9.8/9.2 and BB/9’s of 2.8/2/7/3.1, show that he is in the elite category of starting pitchers.
Chris Perez: The Cardinals called up Perez from Triple-A where he was closing games. With an unsettled closer situation in St. Louis, it is possible that Perez could garner some save opportunities. There is no doubt that he can strike hitters out, 2007 K/9 in Double-A of 13.7 and Triple-A of 9.6, but he has real trouble finding the plate, BB/9 in Double-A of 6.2 and Triple-A of 8.4. More discerning Major League batters will further exploit that weakness. It wouldn’t be surprising if this stay in the Major Leagues was a short one.
Manny Acosta: With his skill set; 5.7 K/9, 5.2 BB/9, and a 55% GB%, it is hard to believe that Acosta will last much longer as the Braves’ closer. Now is the perfect time to sell high.
Blaine Boyer: With Manny Acosta boasting some shaky skills, Boyer would appear next in line to be the closer for the Braves. His skill set; 9.9 K/9, 1.5 BB/9, and a 46% GB%, looks like one that can succeed in that role. Now is a good time to spec on Boyer in mixed leagues.
Jason Hirsh: Hirsh, who has been out with a strained rotator cuff, will begin a minor league rehab assignment sometime next week. Even if he comes back healthy, Hirsh is miscast as a fly ball pitcher, 2006/2007 FB%’s of 52%/51%, in a city built for ground balls pitchers.
