Mike Fontenot: After a hot start, 3 home runs and a .400 batting average in his first 80 AB, Fontenot has come back to earth, .213 batting average and zero home runs in his last 84 AB. A comparison of his BHIP%'s during those two periods, .321 vs. .256, shows that his talent level is closer to his performance in his last 84 AB. This is further backed up by a GB% of 52% being more in-line with the 2 extra-base hits that he has in his last 84 AB than with the 14 that he produced in his first 80 AB.
Andre Ethier: Ethier's sophomore season is sending mixed signals about his future. At 6'1, 210 lbs and being 25 years of age, Ethier's power should be growing, yet his power numbers are stagnant, 11 home runs, 7 triples and 20 in 396 AB last year vs. 9 home runs, 1 triple, and 20 doubles in 307 AB this year, while his GB% has increased to 48% from 41% last year. On the other hand, when he hit .308 last year, he needed a .299 BHIP% to make up for his 81% Ct% and .44 BB/K. This year his .304 batting average is not the product of an inflated BHIP%, it is .257 which is right around the league average, but rather from an improvement in his approach at the plate, 88% Ct% and a .89 BB/K.
Willie Harris: Harris last stole a base on July 21st. Since then he has been caught 4 times and has not even attempted a steal in his last seven games. If he is not stealing, it really cuts into his fantasy value, especially in mixed leagues.
Jamie Moyer: Moyer picked up his 10th win of the season last night when he limited the Marlins to 1 run in 6 innings. The 43 year old pitcher skill set is unspectactular, 5.7 K/9, 2.8 BB/9, and a 39% GB%, and his ERA shows it, 4.79. At this point in his career, Moyer is a replacement level player in NL-only leagues.
Mike Bacsik: Bacsik will now be remembered as the pitcher who served up Barry Bonds' 756th home run. The ironic part is that with an underwhelming skill set, 3.3 K/9, 2.1 BB/9, and a 40% GB%, the only thing keeping him in the major leagues is good fortune, .229 BHIP%.
