Willie Harris: If you picked up Harris, be grateful that you enjoyed some nice stats, 0/5/.362 with 4 stolen bases in 58 AB and then cut bait. He is benefiting from a .390 BHIP% and a 38% LD%, neither of which will last. The low contact rate of 79% is more in line with his previous history and indicates that a huge batting average correction is coming.
Chad Cordero: Cordero is back from a bereavement leave and has returned to the closer role. 2007 has been rough for Cordero with 4 blown saves in 9 tries. The main problem has been his control, 5.3 BB/9, and a touch of gopheritis, 3 home runs allowed in 20.1 innings. Given his history, BB/9's of 2.1 in 2005 and 2.7 in 2006, he should be able to reign in the walks. Being a fly ball type pitcher, 52% FB% in 2006, , he will be susceptible to giving up home runs. Fortunately he pitches half of his games in one of the stingiest parks in the majors for home runs to balance out the fly ball tendencies. Exercising some patience with Cordero should be rewarded.
David Wright: 3 home runs in his last 15 AB should quiet those who were complaining about the lack of power. For the season, Wright is showing his usual power with 10 doubles and 7 home runs. He is also turning into an above average source for speed, a perfect 9 for 9 in the steals department. He is just 24 years of age, which puts him in his pre-peak years of power, so even better numbers should be expected. The speed/power package makes him keeper material for years to come.
David Bush: Bush continues to be plagued by bad luck, 58% strand rate, which is leading to a 5.56 ERA despite superb command, 4.7, a good K/9, 6.7, and an above average GB%, 46%. If he has been dropped in your league, run and pick him up, if not, see if you can get him on the cheap from a disgruntled owner.
Greg Maddux: At 41 years of age, Maddux is still sporting a nice skill set, 5.8 K/9, 1.2 BB/9, and a 51% GB%. His 4.14 ERA is being inflated by a 64% strand rate. Pitching in spacious Petco Field and his underlying numbers make him a good bet for the rest of the season.
