Kevin Millwood- TEX- Inj- Millwood is penciled in for the first game of today's doubleheader, but may not be able to go. Word came late last night that he tweaked his hamstring and will be evaluated before the game to see if he can make the start. If he can't, then Mike Wood is the likely emergency replacement. There is a 40% chance of rain in Arlington today anyway, so the weather may make this academic.
Carl Pavano- NYA- Inj Update- I'm sure this will come as a huge shock, but Pavano's throwing session yesterday was not a success. He lasted less than 10 minutes before having to shut it down. The next step is a trip to Dr. James Andrews, and Pavano is actually looking forward to it. There is something unnatural about that. If you have a date coming up soon in the "When will Pavano's season officially be toast?"pool, you just might be looking at a winner.
Mark Grudzielanek- KC- Inj- Grudzielanek has been out for the past 3 games with a back injury and is only available right now in emergency situations. In his place, Esteban German has gone 5-for-12 with a homer and 5 RBI. Does the name "Wally Pipp"ring a bell?
Reggie Sanders- KC- Inj- Sanders and his .367 batting average had to leave last night's game due to a strained hamstring. An MRI today will confirm the extent of the injury. Until then, it is unknown how much time Sanders will miss.
Gary Sheffield- DET- Hot- We are still early enough in the season where an outstanding game can have a significant impact on batting averages. That happened yesterday, as Sheffield added 35 points to his average to bring it above .200 for only the second time this season, to .226. Over his last 9 games, though, Sheffield has been much better than that, going 14-for-34 with 2 homers and 4 multi-hit games. His Batting EYE over this stretch has been an astounding 3.50. Sheffield seems to be locked into one of those stretches where he is seeing the ball very well and a strike thrown to him is liable to be smacked for a hit.
