to watch (with Starting Jobs in 2007) II
Delmon Young | Tampa Bay Devil Rays
| Outfield
Just two seasons after being the first overall pick
in the 2003 draft, Delmon Young has become the consensus best prospect in
all of baseball. After hitting .322/.388/.538 with 25 homers and 56 total
extra-base hits in 131 games at Single-A in 2004, Young moved up to the
high minors last season and batted .315/.354/.527 with 26 homers and 59
total extra-base hits in 136 games between Double-A and Triple-A. Those
numbers are impressive enough on their own, but what makes them
particularly outstanding is that Young played the entire 2005 season at
the age of 19.
The sky is essentially the limit when it comes to
Youngs offensive potential. He needs to work on drawing walks and could
cut down on his strikeouts, but those are things that tend to improve
naturally at his age. Young has huge power potential, has shown the
ability to post big batting averages wherever hes gone, and has
surprisingly good speed. In addition to hitting .317/.370/.531 with 51
homers and 214 RBIs in 267 pro games in 2005, Young has stolen 53 bases at
75-percent clip. He has legitimate Hall of Fame ability.
Delmon
Young made headlines this season for just about everything but his actual
performance. He received a 50-game suspension for throwing his bat at an
umpire and angered the Devil Rays with negative comments in a USA Today
article. Of course, when it comes to his fantasy value, the important
thing is that Dmitris little brother hit .316/.341/.474 with eight
homers, 34 total extra-base hits, and 22 steals in 86 games at Triple-A.
Arguably baseballs top prospect.
Fantistics Long-Term Fantasy Grade: A+
Andrew Miller | Detroit Tigers |
Starter
The No. 6 overall pick in Junes
draft, Andrew Miller became the first player from the class to make it to
the majors when he was called up last week. Miller dominated as a starter
at the University of North Carolina and was considered by many to be the
top talent in the draft, but slipped to Detroit because of concerns over
his demands. Part of his contract included being called up this early,
but Miller is unlikely to see anything but mop-up duty down the stretch.
Come July of next season, he could be ready to join Justin Verlander and
Jeremy Bonderman in the ace-filled rotation.
Fantistics Long-Term Fantasy Grade: A-
Troy Tulowitzki | Colorado Rockies
| Shortstop
Troy Tulowitzki followed Bobby Crosby
as the starting shortstop at Long Beach State University and then as a
first-round pick, with the Rockies grabbing him seventh overall in 2005.
Tulowitzki hit .291/.370/.473 with 13 homers and 49 total extra-base hits
in 104 games at Double-A and was called up when Colorado decided theyd
seen enough of Clint Barmes out-making. Coors Field no longer inflates
numbers to ridiculous degrees and Tulowitzki doesnt have much speed, but
he projects as one of the better-hitting shortstops in baseball over the
long haul and has value in NL-only leagues right now.
Fantistics Long-Term Fantasy Grade: A-
Alexi Casilla | Minnesota Twins |
Shortstop
Signed by the Angels out of the
Dominican Republic in 2003, Alexi Casilla batted .296/.371/.370 with 75
steals in 156 pro games before being shipped to the Twins for J.C. Romero
during the offseason. Romero has been a complete bust, while Casillas
prospect stock has risen dramatically. He hit .318/.385/.398 with 50
steals in 123 games between Single-A and Double-A, earning a trip to
Minnesota. Hell serve as a pinch-runner and occasional sub for Luis
Castillo at second base for now, but long term Casilla projects as Jason
Bartletts double-play partner as soon as mid-2007.
Fantistics Long-Term Fantasy Grade: B
Adam Lind | Toronto Blue Jays |
Outfield
A third-round pick out of the
University of South Alabama in 2004, Adam Lind batted .313/.373/.484 in
196 games between two levels of Single-A coming into this season. Lind
began this year at Double-A, batted .310/.357/.543 in 91 games, and
received a quick promotion to Triple-A. Once there he went nuts, hitting
.394/.496/.596 in 34 games. Linds high strikeout rate makes it unlikely
that hell continue to post huge batting averages in the majors and hes
limited defensively, but at the very least he projects as a .280-20-90
hitter. He should get a chance in Toronto next season.
Fantistics Long-Term Fantasy Grade: B
Ryan Sweeney | Chicago White Sox |
Outfield
Taken in the second round out of an
Iowa high school in 2003, Ryan Sweeney has moved very quickly through
Chicagos organization, getting a call-up to the big leagues at the age of
21. Hes always been talked about as someone with big-time power
potential, but so far has managed a total of 23 homers in 394 pro games.
He batted .296/.350/.452 with 13 homers and 41 total extra-base hits in
118 games at Triple-A prior to joining the White Sox, which makes Sweeney
a solid bet regardless of whether the power fully develops. If the White
Sox decide to ditch Scott Podsednik, Sweeney is the replacement.
Fantistics Long-Term Fantasy Grade: B
Kevin Kouzmanoff | Cleveland
Indians | Third Base
A sixth-round pick in 2003, Kevin
Kouzmanoff is light on physical tools and heavy on outstanding numbers.
Kouzmanoff hit .330 in 2004 and .339 last season, and then made those
numbers look downright pathetic after moving up to the high minors this
season. Splitting the year between Double-A and Triple-A, Kouzmanoff hit
.379/.437/.656 with 22 homers and 51 total extra-base hits in 94 games
before getting a call-up to the big leagues over the weekend. A third
baseman in the minors, Kouzmanoffs long-term home in the majors is likely
first base or a corner-outfield spot.
Fantistics Long-Term Fantasy Grade: B-
