10 top-notch pitching prospects to watch in 2007

As always there’s a new crop of minor leaguers set to take the stage beginning next spring.  Below you’ll find 10 top-notch pitching prospects to watch for 2007.  These guys are among the best pitching prospects who have yet to get their first taste in the majors, yet still figure to have a major impact at some point in 2007 and beyond.

Philip Hughes | New York Yankees | Starter

A first-round pick in 2004, Philip Hughes was limited to 86.1 innings in 2005 because of shoulder problems.  He was fantastic in those 86 frames, posting a 93-to-20 strikeout-to-walk ratio while allowing just 54 hits.  He kept up the dominant pitching in 2006 and just as importantly stayed healthy, establishing himself as arguably baseball’s premiere pitching prospect heading into 2007.

Hughes began 2006 at Single-A, posting a 1.80 ERA in five starts, and quickly earned a promotion to Double-A.  Once there he went 10-3 with a 2.25 ERA and 138-to-32 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 116 innings, holding opponents to a .179 batting average and just five homers.  The Yankees resisted the urge to deal Hughes for midseason help and then resisted calling him up, but at 20 years old his time will come soon enough.

Fantistics Long-Term Fantasy Grade: A

Homer Bailey | Cincinnati Reds | Starter

Homer Bailey is the NL’s version of Hughes, right down to being 20 years old and a first-round pick in 2004.  Like Hughes, he broke out as a stud prospect in 2005, beginning the year at Single-A and ending it by dominating at Double-A.  Combined between the two levels, Bailey went 10-6 with a 2.47 ERA and 156-to-50 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 138.2 innings, holding opponents to a .198 batting average and seven homers.

There was some talk last month about the Reds calling Bailey up to work out of the bullpen down the stretch, but with their playoff chances fading that seems to have been ruled out.  Expect him to get a legitimate chance at a spot somewhere on the pitching staff coming out of spring training, and at the very least he could be a Jered Weaver-like midseason call-up.

Fantistics Long-Term Fantasy Grade: A

Adam Miller | Cleveland Indians | Starter

Taken in the first round of the 2003 draft, Adam Miller had a monster first full season in 2004 and rocketed up the prospect rankings.  He then struggled through elbow problems last season, throwing just 71 innings to take some of the luster off his prospect status.  Miller made up for lost time by coming back fully healthy this season and is now one of baseball’s truly elite pitching prospects.

Miller went 15-6 with a 2.75 ERA and 157-to-43 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 153.2 innings at Double-A, holding opponents to a .226 batting average while serving up a total of just nine homers.  A ground-ball pitcher with big-time fastball velocity, Miller projects as a prototypical top-of-the-rotation starter.  The Indians can use the pitching help, but Miller doesn’t turn 22 years old until December, making him a likely second-half debut in 2007.

Fantistics Long-Term Fantasy Grade: A-

Yovani Gallardo | Milwaukee Brewers | Starter

A second-round pick in 2004, Yovani Gallardo went 8-3 with a 2.74 ERA and 110-to-51 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 121.1 innings at Single-A in 2005 and then had a true breakout year in 2006.  Gallardo began 2006 by going 6-3 with a 2.09 ERA in 13 Single-A starts and ended it by going 5-2 with a 1.63 ERA in 13 starts at Double-A.  Combined between the two levels, he had 188 strikeouts in 155 innings.

Gallardo was a relative unknown heading into this season, but he’s made a strong case for being among the 10 best pitching prospects around.  At just 20 years old he’s unlikely to make an impact with the Brewers before the second half and may not see Milwaukee until rosters expand next September.  Gallardo can stand to improve his control a bit, which is natural at his age, but every other indicator suggests future stardom.

Fantistics Long-Term Fantasy Grade: A-

Jeff Niemann | Tampa Bay Devil Rays | Starter

The No. 4 overall pick in the 2004 draft, Jeff Niemann struggled with injuries while at Rice University and that has carried over to his professional career.  Niemann was limited to just 30.2 innings in 2005 and got off to a late start in 2006 before ending up with a 2.68 ERA and 84-to-29 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 77.1 innings at Double-A.  He went 5-2 with a 2.24 ERA in 10 second-half starts.

Niemann has everything you’d want in a top-of-the-rotation starter, standing 6-foot-9, throwing an overpowering fastball, racking up strikeouts, and keeping his opponent’s batting average around .200.  He’ll be a star if he can simply keep his arm in one piece, but the lack of uncertainty involved makes him a somewhat risky prospect.  Big risk, big upside, and the Devil Rays can certainly use the pitching help.

Fantistics Long-Term Fantasy Grade: B+

Humberto Sanchez | New York Yankees | Starter

The Tigers don’t need more young pitching with Justin Verlander, Jeremy Bonderman, Joel Zumaya, and Andrew Miller, so they traded away potential ace Humberto Sanchez for Gary Sheffield.  A 31st-round pick in 2001, Sanchez struggled through injuries to post a disappointing 5.57 ERA in 65 innings at Double-A in 2005.  He came back in a big way in 2006, pushing his prospect stock higher than ever.

Sanchez began 2006 back at Double-A, posting a 1.76 ERA and 86-to-27 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 71.2 innings to earn a midseason promotion to Triple-A.  His performance dropped off a bit there, but Sanchez still went 5-3 with a 3.86 ERA and 43-to-20 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 51.1 innings.  A portly 6-foot-6 right-hander with a mid-90s fastball, Sanchez is similar to Zumaya in that he may end up in the bullpen.

Fantistics Long-Term Fantasy Grade: B+

Glen Perkins | Minnesota Twins | Starter

Taken in the first round out of the University of Minnesota in 2004, Glen Perkins moved quickly through the low minors before spending a year and a half at Double-A.  In 37 starts there between 2005 and 2006, Perkins tossed 196.1 innings with a 4.31 ERA.  That doesn’t look particularly great and Perkins’ 8-15 record will also scare some people off, but his 198-to-80 strikeout-to-walk ratio is solid and he coughed up only 15 long balls.

Perkins is never going to be an ace, but at 23 years old he looks like a near-lock to become a solid middle-of-the-rotation starter.  He gave up less than one hit per inning at Double-A and moved up to Triple-A this month, where he struck out 10 batters in a playoff start.  If he’s not traded for hitting during the offseason, Perkins figures to get a look in the Twins’ rotation at some point this year, much like Boof Bonser did in 2006.

Fantistics Long-Term Fantasy Grade: B

Kevin Slowey | Minnesota Twins | Starter

After going 14-2 with a 2.18 ERA at Winthrop University in 2005, the Twins grabbed Kevin Slowey in the second round.  Known for his pinpoint control, Slowey posted a 2.12 ERA and 84-to-8 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 72 innings and then showed that the high strikeout rate was no fluke last season, posting a 1.01 ERA and 99-to-9 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 89.1 innings at Single-A to begin the year.

Slowey moved up to Double-A at midseason and pitched well, posting a 3.19 ERA and 52-to-13 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 59.1 innings.  Slowey’s control went from insanely great to merely very good at Double-A, but it’s also worth noting that he continued to strike out nearly a batter per inning.  Like Perkins, he doesn’t project as an ace because of less-than-overpowering stuff, but should be a solid mid-rotation starter soon.

Fantistics Long-Term Fantasy Grade: B

John Danks | Chicago White Sox | Starter

A first-round pick in 2003, John Danks entered 2006 as one third of the Rangers’ highly touted “DVD” trio of pitching prospects, along with Edinson Volquez and Thomas Diamond.  Volquez is in the majors while Diamond had a disappointing year in the minors, and Danks was somewhere in the middle.  Splitting the season between Double-A and Triple-A, he had a 4.24 ERA and 154-to-56 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 140 innings.

The ERA is ugly, but the strikeout rate is great and it’s important to note that Danks is only 21 years old.  He does get a boost in value now that he will not be pitching in Texas’ hitter-friendly ballpark.  That’s bad news for all pitchers, but would have been especially bad for Danks, who’s a fly-ball hurler who gives up plenty of homers.  He’ll be good, but the long balls may keep him from top-of-the-rotation status.

Fantistics Long-Term Fantasy Grade: B

Micah Owings | Arizona Diamondbacks | Starter

Micah Owings starred as both a hitter and pitcher at Tulane University, with the Diamondbacks grabbing him in the third round of the 2005 draft.  Arizona liked him more as a pitcher and Owings began his pro career pitching out of the bullpen, posting a 2.45 ERA and 30-to-4 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 22 innings at Single-A after signing.  Despite that success as a reliever, Owings moved to the rotation full time in 2006.

Owings began the year by going 6-2 with a 2.91 ERA and 69-to-17 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 74.1 innings at Double-A.  He moved up to Triple-A to finish the season and went 10-0 in 15 starts, but also saw his secondary numbers plummet.  Owings’ ERA rose to 3.70, his strikeout-to-walk fell to 61-to-34 in 87.2 innings, and opponents hit .291.  He’ll likely start 2007 back at Tucson, but could be the first starter Arizona calls up.
