10 top-notch position-player prospects to watch in 2007
As always there’s a new crop of
minor leaguers set to take the stage beginning this spring.
Below you’ll find 10 top-notch position-player prospects to watch for
2007. These guys are among the best hitting prospects who have
yet to get their first taste in the majors, yet still figure to have a
major impact in 2007 and beyond.
Alex Gordon | Kansas City Royals |
Third Base
The No. 2 pick in the 2005 draft, Alex
Gordon surprisingly spent the entire season at Double-A while the Royals
played it very safe with his development. In 130 games at Wichita, Gordon
hit .325/.427/.588 with 29 homers, 69 total extra-base hits, and 22
steals. Gordon’s lack of top-notch speed makes 20-steal seasons unlikely
in the majors, but there’s little doubt that he’s among the elite hitting
prospects in all of baseball.
Mark Teahen’s season-ending injury
gave the Royals an opportunity to call Gordon up for the stretch run, but
they declined. Teahen’s emergence this year casts some doubt about
whether or not Gordon is the team’s long-term third baseman. A shift to
first base or right field makes some sense, but Kansas City also has guys
like Ryan Shealy, Justin Huber, and Billy Butler hanging around the bottom
of the defensive spectrum.
Fantistics Long-Term Fantasy Grade: A
Brandon Wood | Los Angeles Angels |
Shortstop
Just as the Royals did with Gordon,
the Angels were very cautious in their handling of Brandon Wood in 2006, leaving him at Double-A from start to finish. In 128 games at
Arkansas last year, Wood batted .276/.355/.552 with 25 homers, 71 total extra-base
hits, and 19 steals. He struck out 149 times in 453 at-bats, but more
importantly showed that his breakout 2005 campaign was far from a fluke.
There are questions about where Wood
will end up defensively, particularly with Orlando Cabrera entrenched at
shortstop. He’s considered an average defender there at best and may grow
out of the position physically, so the logical move would be to third base
or a corner-outfield spot. In either case, expect Wood to begin this
season at Triple-A and, if things go according to plan, debut with the
Angels sometime around midseason.
Fantistics Long-Term Fantasy Grade: A
Billy Butler | Kansas City Royals |
Outfield
It’s hard to get a feel for when Billy
Butler will get his chance in the big leagues, because he’s only 20 years
old and the new Royals’ regime has shown a lot more patience with
promoting prospects than the Allard Baird-led group did before them. It’d
be surprising if Butler didn’t begin this season at Triple-A, but assuming
he beats up Pacific Coast League pitching like he did Texas League
hurlers, he’ll be screaming for a call-up.
In 119 games at Double-A this season,
Butler batted .331/.388/.499 with 15 homers and 49 total extra-base hits,
which are fantastic numbers for someone who ceased being a teenager in
April. Butler has little defensive skills and will probably end up at
designated hitter, but that won’t change his fantasy stock much. He’s a
natural middle-of-the-order hitter and part of why the Royals’ lineup
should be a force in a couple years.
Fantistics Long-Term Fantasy Grade: A-
Andy LaRoche | Los Angeles Dodgers
| Third Base
Adam LaRoche wasn’t the only member of
his family to have a big year in 2006. His younger brother, third-base
prospect Andy LaRoche, hit .315/.410/.514 with 19 homers and 47 total
extra-base hits in 117 total games between Double-A and Triple-A. Making
those numbers even more impressive is that LaRoche played much of the year
with a relatively major shoulder injury.
The Dodgers have a logjam of quality
players in the infield, but free agency and aging should take care of that
over the offseason. LaRoche remains the team’s long-term answer at third
base—particularly with fellow prospect Joel Guzman being traded to the
Devil Rays—and should keep that label heading into this season despite how
well Wilson Betemit has played.
Fantistics Long-Term Fantasy Grade: A-
Ian Stewart | Colorado Rockies |
Third Base
Two things hurt Ian Stewart’s fantasy
stock quite a bit last season. One is that his performance wasn’t overly
impressive, as Stewart got off to a slow started and ended up batting
.268/.351/.452 with 10 homers and 58 total extra-base hits in 120 games at
Double-A. Beyond that, the fact that Coors Field is no longer a
numbers-boosting hitter’s haven has dropped Stewart’s long-term stock like
a rock.
Another factor in Stewart’s future is
that the Rockies seem committed to Garret Atkins as the long-term third
baseman, which will likely push Stewart to an outfield corner. That
further drags his fantasy potential down, although Stewart remains an
excellent bet at just 21 years old. He’s not nearly the potential fantasy
stud he was at this time last season, but Stewart remains a very good
prospect.
Fantistics Long-Term Fantasy Grade: A-
Felix Pie | Chicago Cubs | Outfield
When Juan Pierre got off to a slow
start, the media in Chicago frequently asked manager Dusty Baker about
calling up Felix Pie from Triple-A. Baker made it very clear that he
didn’t think Pie was ready and the issue became a non-factor once Pierre
eventually got on track. However, now that Pie has a whole year at
Triple-A under his belt and Pierre’s contract option for 2007 looks a
little pricey, the question is sure to pop up again soon.
In 141 games at Iowa, Pie hit
.283/.341/.451 with 15 homers, 56 total extra-base hits, and 17 steals.
Pie was caught stealing 11 times, which is a horrible success rate, but
his raw speed makes him likely to swipe plenty of bases in the majors.
Pie has some room to grow in terms of plate discipline and strike-zone
judgment, but has tons of physical tools and has improved his baseball
skills while climbing the organizational ladder.
Fantistics Long-Term Fantasy Grade: B+
Josh Fields | Chicago White Sox |
Third Base
A first-round pick in 2004, Josh
Fields had a disappointing season at Double-A in 2005 before hitting
.305/.379/.515 with 19 homers, 55 total extra-base hits, and 28 steals in
124 games at Triple-A this year. In a lot of organizations, Fields would
have been a mid-year call-up after he began the year by hitting .329 in
the first half. However, with the White Sox in the playoff race and Joe
Crede manning third base, he remained at Charlotte.
The odds are in favor of Fields
finding a place in Chicago’s lineup this season, but it seems unlikely
that the White Sox would part ways with Crede to clear room at this
point. That leaves left field as the most probable destination, because
first base, right field, and designated hitter are spoken for by
MVP-caliber hitters. Fields has little left to prove in the minors, so
expect someone to be heading out of Chicago before the season starts.
Fantistics Long-Term Fantasy Grade: B
Hunter Pence | Houston Astros |
Outfield
A second-round pick in 2004, Hunter
Pence took the minors by storm immediately after being drafted. Coming
into 2006, Pence was a career .317/.391/.574 hitter with 39 homers
and 84 total extra-base hits in 172 pro games. Despite those huge
numbers, he still had plenty of doubters, but quieted just about every
concern with another big season in 2006.
Pence moved up to Double-A and batted
.283/.357/.533 with 28 homers, 67 total extra-base hits, and 17 steals in
136 games. Houston’s outfield has been in flux for much of the year—with
Willy Taveras, Chris Burke, Preston Wilson, Luke Scott, Aubrey Huff, and
Jason Lane moving in and out of the lineup—so there’ll definitely be room
for Pence somewhere when the Astros deem him ready to contribute.
Fantistics Long-Term Fantasy Grade: B
Evan Longoria | Tampa Bay Devil
Rays | Third Base
The third overall pick in June’s
draft, Evan Longoria moved incredibly quickly through the Devil Rays’
system. In 2006, he hit .433/.487/.879 and .327/.402/.618 in two brief stops at
Single-A, and then made the near-immediate jump up to Double-A to finish
the season. Longoria got off to a great start there, but eventually
cooled down to bat .267/.268/.486 in 26 games. Combined between three
stops, he hit .315/.360/.597 in 62 games.
With B.J. Upton now at third base,
it’s unclear where Longoria will end up once he reaches Tampa Bay. Second
base might work, especially if the Devil Rays grow tired of Jorge Cantu’s
mediocre defense and inconsistent hitting, and a move out of the infield
would only further clog up a crowded outfield depth chart. Whatever the
case, it’s clear that Longoria wasn’t drafted to play in the minors and
he’ll continue to move quickly.
Fantistics Long-Term Fantasy Grade: B
Ryan Braun | Milwaukee Brewers |
Third Base
The fifth overall pick in the 2005
draft after a standout career at the University of Miami, Ryan Braun
entered this season as a popular prospect thanks to hitting .352 in his
first 47 pro games. However, I was skeptical about his long-term chances
because of Braun’s 40-to-11 strikeout-to-walk ratio, which is concerning
for an advanced college hitter playing in the low minors.
When Braun got off to a slow start at
high Single-A this season, my skepticism looked smart. He batted just
.274/.346/.438 in 59 games, striking out 54 times in 226 at-bats. Then,
just as I was ready to begin writing him off, Braun moved up to Double-A
and batted .303/.367/.589 in 59 games to finish the season. His overall
100-to-44 strikeout-to-walk ratio still scares me though, so be cautious.
He may replace Corey Koskie in 2007.
